John Joseph Michael Herman (87) passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Sept. 1, 2012. After spending 63 years together, Jane Dorothy Herman (83), followed within 9 days on Sept.10, 2012 at home from a broken heart, they were absolutely inseparable. They would finish each other’s sentences, cuddle, joke and kiss like teenagers. They lived for each other….ALWAYS.
John was born March 19, 1925 in the Bronx, New York. He served his country during the Second World War in the United States Navy as a Baker Third Class proving that it requires all types of service for victory to be achieved. This experience translated to a love of cooking for his family…especially his famous beans for all gatherings. He always had a smile, joke or a good story to share including some of his escapades in the Navy before he met Jane. Upon fulfillment of his service he met and married Jane in October 1949. First and foremost he loved Jane and had a passion for music, playing violin and organ, singing and dancing, an occasional good card game or casino run. He remained a steady presence in his home up to the end, showing the warmth and humor that characterized his life.
Jane was born on January 6, 1929 in New Burg, New Jersey. Her passion for music playing piano, guitar and organ led her to start teaching music lessons to all generations. She loved crocheting, knitting and sewing all types of items to sell at craft shows and local Senior Assisted Living homes. She fostered growth and life in everything and was motherly to all. She will always be remembered for her Christmas Spirit. Her vast collection of Christmas villages was displayed every year to share with family and friends. Despite her constant pain in her later years, she continued her Christmas tradition, teaching, crafts and doting over the love of her life Johnny.
Never a couple who was afraid to struggle and toil together, they owned and operated two gas stations in New York. Shortly after, Jane began her career of teaching music. They were models of commitment, perseverance, and compromise. They are survived by three sons: John Jay (Patti), William Michael (Lisa), and Robert Joseph (Mary), 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. John passed on a legacy of humor and hospitality, while Jane shared her passion for music, gardening and crafts with every generation that came along.
To their family, they were a symbol of the phrase “better together,” so it was fitting that they left this world so close together. They leave many devoted friends and loved ones, it wasn’t only their children who called them Mom and Dad. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Odyssey Hospice and ComForcare for their unwavering care and compassion. A viewing will be held at East Lawn Palms Mortuary Chapel, 5801 E. Grant Rd, Tucson, AZ 85712 on Saturday, September 15th at 12:30 p.m., followed by the memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Online condolences may be made at legacy.com.
