

Mascarella, John L., devoted son, brother, loving and beloved husband, dad, uncle and granddad; trustworthy and true friend; prudent businessman; a man of uncommon integrity; someone who knew how to laugh and have a good time. John was born in Chicago, IL on September 22, 1930 and passed away from lung cancer and its complications on April 28, 2012 at his home.
He was preceded in death by his father, John; mother, Ruth Witt; and identical twin, James. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Fern; daughters Glenda Empsall (John), Lynne Mascarella, Sue Johnson (Richard); grandchildren, Jessica Johnson, Nathan Empsall, Chris Empsall (Tracy); nieces, Julie Mascarella (Doug), Susan Skowron (John), Jamie Dunlap (Rich); grand nieces and nephews, many cousins, friends and business associates.
John Mascarella practiced architecture for over 44 years. He founded Mascarella and Associates in 1961 and made significant contributions to the development of Tucson and the surrounding communities; designing and overseeing the construction of such landmarks as the 16 story office building on Broadway and Rosemont; University of Arizona Foundation Alumni “Swede” Johnson building and Historic Renovation of University of Arizona Centennial Hall; Viscount Suite Hotel, and Pima Savings on E. Broadway, as well as schools and libraries for Amphitheater and Sierra Vista Public Schools; Tucon and Sunnyside Unified School Districts, Tanque Verde School District; Pima Community College; many other facilities at University of Arizona and numerous projects for Tucson Medical Center and the U.S. Postal Service.
He was active in the community and served in many capacities on the boards of University of Arizona Foundation, Catholic Community Services, and Metropolitan YMCA. John was Past President and a Charter/Life Member of Tucson Conquistadores.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in his memory to the Tucson Conquistadores Foundation to support Southern Arizona youth athletic programs, 6450 E. Broadway Blvd. Tucson, AZ 85712.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012, 5:30 p.m. at the Mountain Oyster Club, 6400 E. El Dorado Circle, Tucson, Arizona 85715.
