Joyce came to Tucson in 1948 from Oak Park, Illinois to earn her education degree from the University of Arizona. While raising her family, she earned master’s degrees in elementary education and English as a second language and launched Tucson’s first Head Start program at Holy Family School.
As a teacher for 49 years, she inspired thousands of students, mainly at Washington School in Prescott and Smith, Bonillas and St. Cyril’s elementary schools and Pima County Adult Education in Tucson. She retired in 2001 from Pima Community College but continued as a substitute teacher of immigrants and refu¬gees until last month.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 1800 S. Kolb Road. In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested donations for pancreatic cancer research to the Arizona Cancer Center, 1515 N. Campbell Avenue, Tuc¬son 85724
Mother modeled her faith and took the Gospel literally “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:31
Mom gave herself particularly to teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants, refugees and prisoners and for many years taught children, especially the reading challenged. Mom’s favorite Charities were St Vincent DePaul and Reading for the Blind where she volunteered.
