With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Juanita Anquinette Burgess on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Juanita “Pinky” Burgess was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, remembered for her warm heart, joyful spirit, and the kindness she extended to everyone she met.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Diana Nash-Crew and John Willie Burgess, Juanita was the eldest of two children and was affectionately known as “Pinky” by those closest to her.
She served with pride and honor in the United States Air Force from 1980 to 1987, receiving an Honorable Discharge. Her sense of duty and service continued throughout her life, especially in the meaningful friendships she formed at her Veterans’ Home.
Juanita found joy in the simple pleasures of life, watching old cartoons, listening to music,
enjoying meals out and cherishing time with her family. Her Tuesdays were especially meaningful, spent with her dedicated volunteer and friend, Dixie Lauderdale, who would read to her—offering both companionship and comfort.
Her laughter and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
Juanita was preceded in death by her loving father, John Willie Burgess, whom she held dear in her heart.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through:
Her devoted mother, Diana Nash-Crew
Twin daughters, Kim Winkfield and Katrina Winkfield
Her brother, John Burgess, and sister-in-law Kim Burgess
Nieces, Diana Burgess and Ming Burgess
And her beloved aunt, Elizabeth Nash-Batts, and her son Balagoon Alkebu-Ian
Our loving, extended family which includes cousins, distant relatives, and friends, new and old.
