Born on May 27, 1933, in Everett, Massachusetts, Lorraine was the daughter of George and Doris Quinton and the younger sister of Bunny Deveue. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and her devoted husband, John (Jack) Melvin.
Lorraine and Jack met in the late 1940s and were married in August 1953. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Southern California to pursue new opportunities. In the late 1950s, they made their home in Arizona, where they would raise their family and continued to build their life.
Together, they welcomed their daughter Lisa Long in 1962 and son Scott Melvin in 1968. The family settled in their longtime home in Tucson. Lorraine found joy in her roles as a grandmother and great-grandmother. Lisa married James Long in 1985 and remained in Tucson, while Scott married Dexter Baksh in 2017 and resides in New York City.
Lorraine’s legacy continues through her three grandchildren—Amy Gravesande (Sam), Kim McCroy (Jonathon), and Leland Long—and her five great-grandchildren: Kora, Stella, Sloane, Ellis, and Olive.
Throughout her life, Lorraine held a variety of jobs, from working in a candy factory to supporting operations at a mining company. But it was her work as a library aide at a local high school that brought her the greatest fulfillment. A devoted reader and longtime churchgoer, Lorraine found deep joy in sharing her love of books. After retirement, she volunteered in the library of her granddaughter’s school. She was known for her strong will and convictions, along with an unconventional perspective she brought to every conversation.
