Hi grandpa. I miss you soo much. More than I probably even realized and I only say that because I could not figure out what i wanted to eat.. finally I found myself making a sandwich... a ham sandwich at that, with potato chips.. halfway through I looked down and realized why my eyes were full of tears. It was a taste of childhood, a feeling of home,  that we all long for. I choked down the rest of my sandwich and then looked online & then there was this. A post of a Pic someone shared of good ol Jc Penny & it almost felt like a little warm hug from you. To most this is nothing, to me, I can picture us there, you sitting down waiting for grandma while she was in there shopping. You with a newspaper in hand writing and circling movie, show times, ads whatever it was. A look of content & concentration all while still keeping an eye on me. I can smell this picture, hear the shuffling of people & you flipping the pages. It's not much but to me it meant alot. It was a nice little reminder. Youre never forgotten Grandpa. We will be celebrating you always. Happy Early birthday grandpa. Love you.

Dad, it's been almost two years since you passed, another Christmas without you, and I still can't believe you're gone. When I dream, I'm often looking for you, wondering when I will see you. When I have seen you, you give me that infectious smile that I think all of us girls have inherited, but you're always busy. I like to think you're busy helping those that really need your help right now and someday you will have more time. Recently I dreamed that you and I were dancing. I could see the side of your face but I didn't want to look up because I didn't want to break the moment.
I miss sharing funny stories with you and groaning at your dad jokes. Your amazing sense of humor is also something I think we all inherited from you. There are many things that have happened since you've been gone that I think "I wish I could tell you about it" and see your reaction and hear your laugh. My love for learning came from you. If I had a question,we would always look in the encyclopedia. You spent hours helping me look up everything. You were the smartest man I ever knew and I only knew I wanted to be as smart as you. I was and am so proud of you. You are my hero.
And you spoiled us... all of us. I remember you cleaning up my "play room" countless times because it was "too hard" and overwhelming. 
I don't know how it is that we were lucky enough to have the best dad for little girls and the best parents for anybody. I will take it as a blessing but I believe it was divine intervention. I know time is supposed to make loss easier but I miss you more and more everyday.
Please look after mom as I know you have. She's the strongest woman I know. I like to think we get that from her. I guess if I had a wish of wishes and a prayer of prayers...it would be to keep mom here as long as possible because her work here is not done.
I know I will get to see you again someday. In the meantime I will keep looking for you in my dreams. I love you always and you're always in my thoughts.

Well now my old friend, a year has past now .  As you know the world not the same. who knows when it will be again.  you would think people would wake up. Problem is too many of us take life on earth for granted, Wrapped up in  power, money and race. Somehow this great country lost it's way.  I long for the simple days when you and I could joke about a bowl of macaroni in Vegas.

I think only you and I understood those jokes. I try to do what I can for your wife and daughters.  I do all I can.  You and I both understood one another. somehow God put us together.... I miss my old friend.  Love you.

I had a flashback this morning, to when I was younger and the occasions we would stay at your house. The crisp cool sheet grandma would lay out on the sofa where Selena and I would fall asleep & fluffy blankets. Popcorn popping in the background & you grandpa sitting there on the edge of your seat, with your crew socks pulled high and your usual cowboys outfit and hat, tounge slightly pressed against your teeth as you looked over the top of your glasses on the tip of your nose glancing between the remote & tv with concentration while trying to get the settings and VCR just right. Grandma in the background " Martin! Nothing scary" and you respond " oh nooo, no no" as you smile slightly. It was a piece of heaven being taken back to that moment in time. You are very missed grandpa. This time without you is hard and I know the holidays will be tough BUT I know you are always always around. And you're smiling just as much as me when Sophia eats a pickle, makes a sour face and rubs her belly YUM!! I love you so.

I'd say we have never spent much time together and I know my grandmother Gloria took it quite hard when you passed to a better world (the real world) I want to pay my respects and say thank you for your service tio. I love you and I will see you in heaven.

Sorry, i would be at a loss if if I failed to mention what I wrote in my original goodbye.  During all my conversations with Granma Lupe,  Martin was always  referred to her Angel.  So in honor to her and Martin, both those Angels are in heaven. They both flew to close to the ground, like that Willie Nelson song. I was blessed to know two Angels in my life.

Well, my old friend , it's been a week now and I miss you.  since then,  your wife and daughters presented and gave me the Flag of our great country that covered your body and casket when you passed. I was able to carry you one last time in that hospice room. I wrapped the flag over you. I knew what it meant, too many don't know these days. It's taken for granted. I miss you my old friend.  I've been seeing these Hawks all over where I go. I couldn't help, but notice at the funeral service this big hawk soaring back in forth. I thought to myself,  Martin saying,  I've laid in bed enough, time for me to soar.... Time for me to celebrate my Lord and Savior, for he has risen me!!, He is God... Thank God almighty,  My old friend has found comfort in our Lord... I love him and will miss him til we meet again... Ride on Cowboy Marty!!!!!

Dad,

Through our deep sorrow it’s hard to imagine our days ahead without you. The world feels much emptier and a little scarier without your assuring words and bear hugs readily available. You always made it feel like everything was going to be ok. Now we must gather strength as a family to take steps forward.  I was distressed our steps would take us farther from you but now I know the path is merely a full circle to leads us back to you. We promise to take time to laugh and enjoy good times along the way. Thank You Dad for the love and care you gave our mother for 60 years, for all the sacrifices you made, for the unconditional love, the bear hugs, all the stories, good laughs and snacks we shared together, for the movies you took us to, for tirelessly playing kid games with us, for always having Plan A and Plan B, for treating our spouses like sons, spoiling the grandkids, for the Goodnight Song you sang to us, and for all the wonderful memories you left us. We could not have had a better dad if we had hand picked one ourselves. We pray that when you reached heaven you took all the love you received from us with you. We miss you more than our words can express but we will carry in our hearts your legacy of love, hugs, and laughter always.

I wrote a 9 page devotion to my old friend last Saturday. Hard to caption all that here.  41 years ago, I met my old friend Martin Ayala while serving together in the military. Three years later, I would meet the love of my life, Elisa Ayala. I met with Mr. Ayala, he only asked me if I loved his daughter. I told Mr. Ayala I loved her and would til I die.  I would never burden him with my problems. That was 37 years ago. Mr. Ayala said Ok. I remember that until this day. My Father in law grew to become my best friend.  Three children later, I saw the traits and character in my own sons that their Grandpa had. The artist Doug, the warrior Steven, the compassionate one Tommy Tucker. Martin's legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren and great grand children. Your legacy is not built upon wealth , power, or position. It is built with what God placed in your heart and what you chose to do with it. Martin chose well. He died a very rich man. As the good Lord says, don't build your riches here on this earth, but build them in heaven.  We went many times to Vegas with Martin and Gloria to win riches. I would always say we are already rich.  Speaking of Vegas, Martin went by Uptown there, but at check time he was alligator arms.... no not really.  So many memories there with my old friend. So many times we were in tears laughing by the jokes we told each other or people we saw. When he asked me why this gal kept telling him she liked Macaroni or why some gal asked me if I needed company playing a penny machine...  all I can say is HUH!!!!! God placed me with this family for a reason and I am so blessed.  There will be no more crying and the sun will be shining as my old friend, Cowboy Marty rides away. I will see my old friend again. I celebrate the life of Martin Ayala. My old friend.

Dad, I miss you so much.  You were such a humble man, and sacrificed for us so many times, and in ways we're not even aware of.  You taught us the importance of hard work and having a good work ethic,  that doing for others is always the better reward.  You always led by example.  I love your sense of humor and that you taught us how to laugh at ourselves.  You had a way of making everyone feel important.  You're gone way too soon and it's heartbreaking.  I know I'll see you again, so that helps ease the pain.  I love you forever.

I will miss the way you said " Helloo" when you answered the phone. The pure joy that would come over your face when you saw Sophia. I will forever cherish the memories growing up of watching you shave with your electric shaver.  The silly noise you'd make when we'd poke your belly & who could forget the potato chips, pickles & ham sandwiches! & so much more. Thank you Grandpa, for being an amazing Grandpa. For loving us all unconditionally. You are oh so loved & deeply missed.  "Although a limb from our tree has fallen, the roots remain deep" You will never be forgotten. I love you. 

Thank you for being my dad. The best dad! I will miss your bear hugs, your jokes, your stories, your laugh and your company.   You gave us so many good memories.  I love you Pop! 

Martin was an amazing man, he always made me feel welcome in his home with love and made me feel like I was family too. He will be dearly missed.

Rest in Peace, Sgt. Ayala. I was honored to have been able to serve my country in the company of professionals such as you. You were an outstanding N.C.O., liked and respected by all of us who had the good fortune to be mentored by you. You will never be forgotten.
