Mary Florence Fredrick

Mary Florence Cox Fredrick was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a gal from Chicago who survived the Great Depression, two world wars, numerous presidents and all their scandals. She saw men race to the moon and even beyond and stood helpless with the rest of the world during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the explosion of the Challenger, and even the fall of the World Trade Towers. She enjoyed the inventions of telephones, televisions, computers, microwave ovens and cell phones.

In 1937 Mary wed the love of her life, William George Fredrick, at St. Mary’s church in Mundelein. During her married life she and Bill ran a tavern in Ivanhoe, The Ivanhoe Tavern, had a hunting club and even a mink farm. Their lovely home on the lake provided a wonderful place in which to raise a family. Mary was mother to eight, Judith, Mary Louise, William, Thomas, Kathryn, Gerald, Michelle and Rosemary. Mary and Bill enjoyed a wonderful social life and had numerous family in the area.

It was 1959 when Bill and Mary decided to pack up the family and move out to the old west. Their oldest daughter, Judy, was married to Ken Behm by that time and remained in Illinois, but the rest of the family piled in the car and headed to Tucson. Bill worked at the University of Arizona animal farm while Mary worked at various restaurants in the Tucson area. Bill passed away in 1969 back in Illinois, leaving Mary a widow with three children still at home.

Mary kept her family in Tucson, which had now become home. She toiled endlessly for many years keeping food on the table for her youngest. Mary was working in the kitchen at the OK Corral when it was destroyed by fire, sending her into early retirement. It was then that she moved in with son Bill where she remained the rest of her life. She continued to spend all her summers in Illinois with daughter Judy until shortly before her death.

Mary was a sister to Sarah, Effie and brother Bill. She was an aunt to many. She was my beloved “Little Grandma,” a friend and confidant, and her wit and humor will be missed by all who loved her. May she rest in peace with her betrothed forever.
