Mary was born to the late Harold and Matilda (Joseph) Benjamin on February 3rd, 1938, in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. From a young age, Mary made the most of the opportunities she had including attending trade school to become a seamstress and fashion designer. As a strong Roman Catholic, Mary was a devoted parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Parish, attending each week and continually praying for the safety and wellbeing of her family. With many hobbies such as cooking, painting, travelling, reading, exercising, and playing music, she found joy in what she did. Mary especially showed her love through cooking for her children, grandchildren, family, and friends. Mary’s cooking brought people together. Around her table, we would share an amazing meal with her famous eggplant curry. Mary cared for so many in her lifetime. Never afraid to speak her mind and stand up for her beliefs, she was a symbol of bravery. Her uplifting and forward-thinking mindset taught us how to live a courageous and purposeful life.
Mary was predeceased by her mother, father, husband, and two siblings. She is survived by her daughter, son, son-in-law, four siblings, seven siblings-in-law, six grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
