Norma Jean Myers was born August 24, 1928, to the parents of Conley Newsome and Mozelle Mosley Newsome, in Greenville, Texas. She was the oldest of four siblings. Losing her mother to chronic asthma at 10 years old, she was primarily raised by her stepmother Mrs. Ola Mae Staples Newsome. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1944. Norma and Morris Oliver Myers, her childhood sweetheart, were united in holy matrimony in 1946. While in Texas, five children were born of this union. They moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1956, where their sixth and final child was born.
Beginning her career as a Nurse Aide at St. Mary's Hospital in 1963, she perused additional course work and was elevated to a Nurse Assistant I in 1972. Norma retired in 1996 after 33 years of service and was awarded a plaque of distinction for "Dedicated service to her many patients".
Sis. Myers joined Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church in 1962, under the pastorate of Rev. James E. Milton. Faithful, but quiet, she was a member of the Missionary Society and served several years as Financial Secretary, managing the records of personal giving. For Senior Appreciation in 2015 she was "acknowledged for dedicated service". And in 2019, was presented a certificate of recognition for the Annual Woman's Day for " Faithful attendance of 40+ years, Active Longevity 90 years and Role Model". It was a known fact that viewing from the pulpit, on the left hand side, about three quarters of the way back was her seat. She remained a member of Grace Temple under the leadership of Pastor D. Grady Scott until her passing.
A praying woman with a heart of gold, "Grandma" was honorable, strong, wise and kind. She was sacrificial, witty, fair and patient; happy and fun. She was a remarkable mother, grandmother, aunt and friend- a delight to all who knew her.
A rich, full life well-lived and loved, Norma Jean Myers took hold of the Lord's hand and departed this life on Saturday, March 7th, 2020, leaving to perpetuate her legacy her children, Phyllis Myers-Smith, Mozelle McClelland (Gerald) of Phoenix, AZ; Eddie, Gloria (Morris) of Tucson; Mary, Morris (Cynthia) of Sarasota, FL; 11 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of extended family and friends.
