Tom made his debut causing his mother to take a rickshaw ride to the hospital during a typhoon in Shanghai, China on 10 July, 1939. His parents were Rev. Milner Callaway Brittain and Mary Josephine Brown, Southern Baptist missionaries to China. Predeceased by parents and eldest son, Timothy Colin Brittain.
Tom turned one year on the ship as it took the family back to the USA. He was raised in Fort Myers, Florida, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and attended school in Fort Davis and Taft, Texas. He served 8 years in the US Air Force stationed at Kadina AFB, Okinawa; Dyess AFB, Abilene, Texas and Walker AFB, Roswell, New Mexico. He then attended college on the Viet Nam War Era GI Bill. He received his BA from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, and MS and PhD from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia - the same college his Great-Grandfather Jabez Brittain graduated from in 1861. Dr. Brittain completed his Internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Tom enjoyed genealogy, golf, flying, skydiving, golf, cross country skiing, hiking, golf and traveling.
He is survived by his wife Gretchen, son Kevin Patrick (Vanessa), Poppa’s grand-daughters Mara and Hailee of Tucson; sister Martha Pausky (Darrell) of Waco, Texas; brother Paul Brittain (Joan) of Lehigh Acres, Florida; sister–in-law Elizabeth Grant (Jabe Zink) of Cordova, New Mexico; brothers-in-law Paul Gadbois (Rosa) of Naples, Italy; Michael Gadbois of Houston, Texas; John Gadbois of Key West, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Brittain was employed as a Clinical Psychologist at Western Kentucky Community Mental Health in Paducah, Kentucky until he and his family moved to Tucson in 1978. In Tucson he was employed by Tucson Child Guidance, Palo Verde Hospital, Group Health Medical Associates, Thomas-Davis Clinic, Catalina Behavioral Health and in private practice until retirement. After retirement he was employed as a sub-contractor for the Department of Defense. In this capacity he traveled to American military establishments in Germany, Texas, Virginia, Alaska, Guam, United Kingdom, New Mexico, and Arizona. Always the Southern gentleman, he will be missed by his loved ones and friends.
Dr. Brittain was a 15 year survivor of prostate cancer. He fought valiantly against lung cancer at the end but lost the battle. In lieu of flowers please make your donations to a cancer research facility of your choice.
