I remember the Pemberton family that lived at the end of the runway although the boys were a bit older than my brother and I.  Back then, there weren't many houses off of Camino Verde so you knew your neighbors.  I apologize for the times my dad buzzed your house with the plane on his way to Ryan Field for fuel.  :)  Great memories and a great way to grow up. Deepest sympathy to the family for the loss of your matriarch.

A lot of people have stories to tell about "Slim",mine may be a little unusual,but,more importantly,I was able to slightly shock him that I remembered it,&thank him approx.35 years later.In 1968 our house burnt down,in those days my parents fought the fire themselves.This neighbor couple shows up,helped out,then under crazy circumstances,they told my parents they would take these two boys home with them,feed,care for them until things calmed down.35 years later,hearing a name, I walked up to Slim at a BBQ,Profusely thanked him.After he recovered,put it together,he said "aw,regular day,".I'll bet it was.May God greet this awesome Man with open arms!

I always enjoyed my visits with Uncle Wendell and loved hearing all of his stories.  He was quite a character and I will miss him a lot.  Uncle Wendell and Aunt Marie were a great example of how a couple should be.  They always made us feel welcomed.  My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. When my son Tristen married Rhonda it was the beginning of my new extended family. I am not sure which holiday it was but I went to Slim's house for the first time, I was welcomed like I had been part of the family for years. I have really enjoyed all the times that I have been at the family gatherings there. Slim has taught what it means to be a family, he had great values, and has been a true inspiration. I will always remember his smiling face when I came thru the door, always happy to see me. I will miss him dearly.

The Greatest men I new that was also my hero, my mentor, my teacher, my favorite story teller, turned 92 on June 20th and also passed away his name was W.R. Pemberton and me and my family will never be the same. Rest in peace grandpa and I hope you and grandma are together again, thank you for teaching me how to be a great man and to be accountable for your own actions. I LOVE YOU

Slim was a wonderful man and will be missed by many.  My condolences to his family.

Dear family,
My first visit to Tucson was when I was 13 years old and only wanted to be in Ohio with friends.  It was the only vacation that I remember my mother taking and it was an eye-opening visit to us Midwesterners.  Wendell and Marie took us to Nogales, Mt. Lemon, and the Desert Museum and introduced us to wonderful Mexican food.  As I look back on it I wonder how they could have accommodated 6 more bodies in their home that already held 2 adults and 4 young boys.  It was the beginning of years of visits with Wendell and Marie and than just with Wendell, the boys and their families.  My sister loved Wendell more than life and that love was reciprocated.  They had a long and wonderful life together.   Phil and I enjoyed visiting Wendell in Tucson because you could always count on a warm welcome, lots of family fun, great food, and certain surprises that the boys loved to turn on Phil.  I think the boys inherited that gene from Wendell.  Wendell's home was a haven and gathering place to everyone including us.  He always greeted you with a hug and smile and his endearing qualities were many; love of family, loyal, generous, hardworking, smart, patriotic, great story teller, and more.      

Wendell, we'll miss the talks around the kitchen table, the stories you shared with us, and that welcoming hug, handshake and smile!  We are not saying goodbye because the next time we are on the ranch we know you will be there in spirit.   HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU!

Aunt Susie & Uncle Phil

Uncle Wendell was my favorite. I loved his smile and Sence of humor (and all the little quotes). He always called me Smilie,how I will miss hearing that from him. I cannot even fathom never seeing him again. I so wanted my son, Tristan to meet him and see what a joy his life bistowed. I always thought in some ways he reminded me of my dad, Jim Clay. You knew if he liked you or not and Uncle Wendell was not afraid to tell it like it is:)My heartfelt sympathies go to all of my family out west. I know you already now this but you really have lost a treasure.
