Donald Keith Pinard was born in Riverton, Wyoming, January 2, 1923 to Ed and Anna (Schoing) Pinard. He was reared as a child in Seattle, and then moved to Olympia where he graduated from Olympia High School in 1941.
He worked at Boeing’s for a year to earn money for college. He entered the University of Washington and then transferred to the V-12 program. As WWI ended, the V-12 was discontinued so the navy sent him to New York where he was commissioned as an ensign. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor until he was discharged, subject to recall at any time. In 1951 he was again called into service during the Korean War where he served as gunnery officer on a destroyer, the USS Kidd.
After the war he resumed duties in the Highways Department as a civil engineer, retiring in 1977 after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Woodward Pinard, for sons, Steven, Philip, Mark and Austin with their wives, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After retiring for Highways, Don worked as a carpenter doing special kitchens for many county residents. He did expert carving, ship modeling, and fancy woodworking for many people.
The family would like to thank Hospice, the Veterans’ Administration and Home Instead for their very personal care and concern.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Pinard residence, 7421 Zangle Rd NE, Olympia, on Saturday, May 30th at 2:00 p.m.
