Dorrit was born in Frederikshavn, Denmark to Niels Orla Jensen and Krista Marie Jensen (Madsen). Dorrit converted to the LDS faith while in Denmark and came to the United States in 1963 to work for the Danish Consulate General in San Francisco. There she met U.S. Navy Sailor Douglas Albert Gruendell at a church service. Doug and Dorrit married and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where they started a family. Over the next 52 years the pair raised three children and called Utah, Wyoming, and Washington home. Douglas passed in 2016, however, Dorrit's devotion to him did not.
Dorrit loved to travel, doted on her family, and was a loyal friend to many. She enjoyed gardening, spending time outside, and honoring her Danish heritage.
Dorrit was preceded in death by her parents, younger brother Niels Ebbe Jensen, and the love of her life Douglas.
Dorrit is survived by her younger brother Hans Georg Jensen (Else Marie) of Frederikshavn, Denmark, son Brian Gruendell (Tina) of Pasco, son Gordon Gruendell of Vancouver, daughter Kari O'Neill of Burien, as well as six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
