Emmogene Hoerling was born on November 18, 1920 in Chehalis, Washington. She grew up in Toledo, Washington. Emmogene attended the same school her parents went to. It was called Jackson Prairie School. Emmogene left school after her 8th year to go with her family to California. They followed the ripening fruits and vegetables during the Great Depression in order to keep the family fed. Emmogene picked everything from fruits and vegetables to ferns and hops. A family friend named Earl Redfield had traveled along with the family, and when Emmogene was 15, Earl took her for his bride. They married in Marysville, California on the 11th of January, 1935. They had three children over the years, Jerry came 3 days before her 16th birthday, Larry lives in Olympia, and Mary lived in Mt Lake Terrace. Emmogene is a member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and enjoys going to tribal meetings. She lived in Oregon for the last 25 years, and moved to Washington to be closer to her family. Services will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Mils & Mills Funeral Home at 5725 Littlerock Rd SW, Tumwater, WA.
