Jackie was a devout Christian since her childhood. She was baptized on July 17, 1949. She attended Linfield College in 1955. Over her lifetime she attended several churches including a Presbyterian in Seattle, Tumwater Baptist, and finally found her church home at Olympia First Baptist Church. Jackie was married on July 5, 1957, at Olympia First Baptist Church and she and Fritz continued to worship there for the remainder of their lives. Over the course of Jackie's lifetime, she participated in Baptist Youth Fellowship, Sunday school, choir, Camp Bethel, and both Lydia and Rachael circles. Through her participation in circles Jackie served at many weddings and memorials. Jackie was on the Mission Board and attended a mission convention in Greenlake, Wisconsin which had a profound impact on her life. Jackie was also on the prayer chain for many years. She was a prayer warrior always, as evidenced by the bible verses and prayers posted throughout her home. Jackie also enjoyed, filling in on occasion, as the church secretary.
In addition to Jackie's Christian service, she was a member of Washington State
University Extension Homemakers. She was proud of her years learning with Homemakers and often wore her WSU Cougar shirts. For Jackie's creative outlets she sewed clothing for herself and her young children, she knitted, crocheted, and had a fondness for ceramics. As Jackie and her children grew more independent, she went back to school in business, then dental assisting, and floral arranging. Her house always had fresh cut flowers, in beautiful arrangements, in every room.
Jackie was always a good sport. She and Fritz were married for nearly 55 years before he passed. Fritz was an avid outdoorsman who hunted large and small game, fished, played sports, and coached his sons in baseball and football. His job also required him to be away a lot. Jackie cooked the wild meats, whether she wanted to or not, had meals on the table regardless of the time of day, and reared the four children. In addition to the rearing of four children, Jackie helped raise and train 12 German Shorthaired Pointers, one litter of GSP puppies, two smaller house dogs, and two cats. Much of the time, Jackie tackled these responsibilities alone. She went hiking, camping, boating, hunting and fishing, clamming and berry picking in her younger years, and rarely complained. When
Jackie and Fritz finally reached retirement age, they spent more time as a couple and enjoyed vacationing at Lake Tahoe and Hawaii on a regular basis. Her favorite part of the vacation was to shop for a new pendant or pair of earrings to represent the places she had visited.
In Jackie's last few years of life she limited her own driving. She would venture out to Eastside Ralph's Thriftway, as it was only a couple miles from her home. When coaxed to get out of the house and someone was available to drive, Jackie enjoyed browsing around Macy's, and always loved to find a new pair of shoes. She would always enjoy getting to have a lunch out. In most recent years as Jackie became more tied to home, her favorite Friday night meal was Eastside Big Tom's chicken sandwich.
Jackie lived a full and impactful life. Jackie will be missed by those who love her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz; and their third child, Donna (Harpel) Copeland. Jackie is survived by three children: Diane (Harpel) Lewis, Ronald Harpel and wife Christin, and Russell Harpel. Jackie also has five grandchildren: Ian Lewis, April (Lewis) Munn, Katelin Harpel, Morgan Harpel, and Sabryee Copeland. Jackie is also survived by a younger sister, Linda Turner, and several cousins.
