On October 7, 2022, John Vance ("JV") Lyman passed away from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. JV was born in Olympia, WA on November 17, 1944. He attended St. Michael Parrish School and graduated from Olympia High School in 1963, where he was a standout member of the baseball team. JV obtained a degree in accounting, with honors, from the University of Washington. He subsequently received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence, cum laude, from Willamette University School of Law. During his third year in law school, JV married Jerilynn (nee Beach) Lyman ("Jeri").
Following law school, JV and Jeri returned to Olympia to start a law practice and raise a family. They welcomed son Charlie into this world in 1974 and daughter Mollie in 1976. Countless canine companions were also members of the Lyman household over the years. JV was fortunate to practice law in Olympia for more than forty years with fellow members of the Thurston County Bar Association, whom he respected as professional colleagues and considered dear friends. He also served the cities of Tumwater and Tenino in the capacity of municipal court judge.
JV enjoyed golfing, bowling, biking and skiing. To say the least, he was a sports enthusiast. In addition to his beloved Huskies (go Dawgs!), he cheered for the Mariners, Sonics and Seahawks in good times and bad times. His favorite sporting events, however, were those of Charlie and Mollie and their friends at Olympia High School (go Bears!).
JV will always be loved and missed by Charlie and his wife, Michelle, Mollie and her daughter, Kennedy, as well as many other family and friends.
A celebration of his life is planned to take place in early 2023.
As a lifelong resident of Olympia, JV was proud of our community. Among other civic passions, JV loved Lakefair (in particular, the parade, fireworks and resulting community inspiration) and served as a Capitalarian.
Remembrances may be made to Capital Lakefair at lakefair.org or any charity of your choice.
