Joseph “Joe” Campo, 65, of Olympia WA passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 31, 2019. Joe was born October 9, 1953 in New York, New York to Ann (Zuppardo) Campo and Joseph S. Campo. He graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1971, he attended Evergreen State College the first year it opened and was a graduate of the class of 1975. He later earned a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Washington.
Joe worked as an Epidemiologist for the state of Washington for 37 years, mainly for the Department of Health and the Office of Financial Management. During that time Joe worked tirelessly on public health issues and helped to shape many statewide policy decisions. He was recognized by the Washington State Legislature’s Joint Select Committee on Health Care Oversight for his nuanced thought and inquisitiveness when approaching health care issues.
His commitment to public service also took him to the Republic of Ireland where he worked as a Research Fellow for the Northern Island Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Registry of Ireland. He was instrumental in writing the All-Ireland Cancer Statistics Report.
Joe loved the outdoors. He liked to go sailing, hiking and for long (topless) drives in his little red Miata. Some of Joe’s favorite things included cooking, hosting family and friends, listening to music, philosophy, art, opera and the symphony.
Joe was preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his wife Bonita (Bonnie Hill) Campo, his daughter, Nicole (Campo) Shiner and Jason Shiner, grandsons Owen and Izaak Shiner of Boston. His sons Orion Campo (Haley Watson) and Heath Campo. His sister Olivia (Campo) and Danny Cullen, nephew Gabriel Cullen and nieces Melissa Cullen, Katherine Cullen and Faith Cullen and his cousin Geraldine McGowan of Boston. His best friend of 48 years Chuck Smid was also by his side.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, April 5, 2019 at 6:00 PM at Mills and Mills Funeral Home in Tumwater, WA.
