Joe was like my own personal Comet.  He'd blaze into my life and drift out.  Always making me laugh.  We have long discussions on life  and the universe, while watching and naming the birds that came to the feeder on his deck. I remember a heated discussion on which sport was the more noble. Baseball or Football. 

Long before he was ill we had a discussion of  if there is life after death. He said he didn't believe there was.  I was firmly in" there is" camp.  So we agreed that if one of us should go first and there was life after death, we would give the other a sign.  I jokingly said to send sign by a bird, or a text which was one of the ways he would break disturbing news to me. 

When he told me he was ill, (by text!) I told him that was impossible. He was the luckiest man alive. I mean the IRS had already declared him dead once already.  I truly believed that he would beat this. I am so saddened to hear we've lost him.   I'm glad he took to heart my final lecture to him on finding love and that he and Bonnie were together.   

I consider it a great privilege  to have know him. And Id like to think hes given me a sign.   By bird and by text. Rest in peace my friend.  Condolences to his family and friends



Campos: I am sending you all my deepest sympathies. I had known Joe as long as I can remember as a childhood friend of Nicole, Orion, and Heath. In my adult life I had the great pleasure of working with Joe a number of times. I always enjoyed his direct nature when working with him, and will think of him fondly from my experiences with him. Sending each of you all of my love. 

I first met Joe when I became best friends with his older sister Olivia. Joe was not the typical younger brother. He was cool, not annoying and he shared our love of music. As often happens I did not see much of Joe or Olivia after high school but I reconnected with Olivia and then a few years ago with Joe when he sent me a vintage music magazine at Olivia’s suggestion. We became Facebook friends and I enjoyed his posts and our occasional “discussions” on FB. He had such a zest for life and wide ranging interests. When he was diagnosed he very candidly shared his journey, the highs and the lows. I am grateful to him for that. I am glad that I got to experience his wit and intelligence and everything else that he shared but so sorry that it ended too soon. I always thought there was more time. Here’s to a life well lived! My condolences to his family. Rest In Peace Joe, I am certain we will meet again. 

Thank you Uncle Joe for always being nice to me, no matter what. Thank you for always sticking up for me. I truly love you so much. I will see you on the other side. We will hang out much more then. I can't wait. Love you so much and thank you so much.

I met Joe in Ireland while we were both working for the National Cancer Registry.......we shared an office for a year and for most of that time I had a pain in my face from laughing! He was hugely entertaining.....the stories.....about him heading to Woodstock and his childhood imaginary friend...... His mind was amazing.....a wonderful researcher and epidemiologist who got adorably nerdy about data and maps. But then he had such diverse interests......he introduced me to cowboy yodelling!!! There was never a dull moment. We took a trip to Olympia in 2004 for Thanksgiving and spent a wonderful time with him and his family including a trip to Snoqualmie Falls to eat oysters......he always had great taste.  Through Facebook we stayed in touch over the years and I adored his wit and charm. The positivity, humour and dignity that he showed through illness was a lesson to us all. He will remain one of my favourite people forever. He leaves a huge void for all who had the privilege of knowing him.  Until we meet again. ..... RIP my friend.

Joe was one of the coolest dudes in our little town of Shoreham NY.   I remember countless times hanging out with him, especially through high school.  He was incredibly bright,  full of good will and always had a kind and genuine smile.   Not to mention a ton of fun to be around!   Joe was loved by all who had the privilege to know him,  he will be missed tremendously.  Godspeed Joe, see you on the flip-side!     My deepest condolences to all.   

I remember Joe in high school, although I didn't know him very well. I am so sorry for the loss of Joe, who was clearly fun, interesting, caring and will be deeply missed.

That picture of Joe was taken during our last hike this past September. I remember he was feeling good and wanted to hike further on the trail than we originally expected to.  We ended up hiking about 14 miles. It was a good day for us both. We hiked quite bit over the years. I especially enjoyed our conversations on the trails which ranged from quantum physics to comic books. The trails will always remind me of Joe and the fun we had walking though the trees.

Past algebra because of him.  We found each other on Facebook over the summer. It was great to his voice again. The Shorham Long Island boy will forever be in my heart. FLY MY TUTOR 

I grew up in Shoreham, NY, and though five years younger than Joe, even back then he was legendary.  Fast forward decades and the five year age difference was negligible, and social media found us sharing bits and pieces of our current lives.  It was such a treat to stop in Olympia and see Joe last October. He was, is, a singular human.  I will remember him always.
