Vernon “Jake” Jacob Horst, born November 6, 1926, in Tenino, Washington, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on April 17, 2026.
Jake was born to Hubert J. Horst and Artie (Whited) Wickland. He was raised alongside his sisters, Maca Hill and Marie Fesler. He married his wife, Louella May Curtit in 1944. He went on to build a life defined by hard work, dedication and a deep love for his family.
A proud veteran, Jake served as a paratrooper in the United States Army during World War II. His service reflected the courage and resilience that would characterize the rest of his life.
Jake was a man of many talents and trades. Throughout his life, he worked in trucking, farming, and logging and was known for his entrepreneurial spirit. He successfully ran a sawmill, operated a trucking business, raised cattle herds and worked in hay and grain production. At one point, he also owned and operated his own store. His interests in cattle, logging and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) reflected his lifelong connection to the land and rural life. Above all, Jake was a devoted father and provider who took great pride in caring for his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louella Horst; sister, Maca Hill and Sean Garrison.
Survivors include his children, Donald V. Horst, Doris L. Bone and Margaret L. Garrison; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Jake will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his independence and his unwavering commitment to his family. His legacy lives on through the generations he helped raise and support.
