A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Evergreen Baptist Church, Vance, AL, with Brother Jack Clary officiating. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm at the church.
Charles was the second child born to Charles H. and Mary Gully in DeKalb County, MS. Charles graduated from high school and immediately signed up for the Navy at only 17 years of age. He often told the story of being on a ship sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on his 18th birthday. There are so many stories he would share of his time in the Navy, spent all over the world, including stops in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii. Charles was very proud of his service to our country, and even later in life, when he would forget many things, he could always remember in great detail the types of planes he worked on and the friendships he made. Charles married Sarah Vanoy in May of 1954 and moved to Vance, AL in 1962. There, they raised 3 children in a peaceful, loving home where he lived as an example of how to put God first, care for family, and serve others. He served his church faithfully in so many different roles over many years, but perhaps his most rewarding service was to his wife, Sarah. He demonstrated such tender kindness and sensitivity to her as he cared for her in their home until her passing in 2014. Of all the things he did over his 94 years, Charles would say this was his most cherished accomplishment. A favorite scripture that sums up Charles Gully is found in Psalms 91: 14-16, “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Vanoy Gully; parents, Charles Henry and Mary Burnette Gully; sister, Mary Jo Harper; and brother-in-law and best friend, Billy Ray Harper.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen Elaine Galloway (Bryan), Sherry Ann Holding (Bruce); son, Timothy Charles Gully (Alyson); grandchildren, Megan Jackson, Seth Galloway (Lacey), Jared Galloway, Madelyn Holding, Fowler Holding (Julia), Hunter Holding, Wynston Gully (Haley), Holden Gully (Sellers), Steadman Gully; great grandchildren, Ava Jackson, Chloe Jackson, Nora Jackson, Sawyer Jackson, Lana Galloway, Ruth Lauren Galloway, Zelious Galloway, Evangeline Holding, Charles Rhodes Gully, Holden Graham Gully, Wynne Eleanor Gully, and expecting Henry Shepherd Gully in July.
