

Richard Douglas Farmer, age 84, of Tuscaloosa died April 6, 2015, at Moundville Health and Rehab with his family around him. Services will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015, with Bro. Wayne Duren and Bro. Jimmy Garner officiating and Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Gardens. The Family will receive friends tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Memory Chapel.His parents, Claude M. Farmer and Ovella Farmer and his sister Opal Farmer preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Willie Belle Farmer; sons, Steve (Cathy) Farmer and Alan (Teri) Farmer; grandsons, Matthew (Holly), Justin, and Clint Farmer; and two great grandsons, Blake and Bradley Farmer. He was a member of East Pointe Church of Christ and attended faithfully until his illness.Douglas was a wonderful dad of two sons, and they loved him dearly. He and his sons enjoyed camping and riding horses together. Along with neighbors, they would ride from home to Lake Payne. He was a role model of many young boys.Douglas was always a Farmer not only in name but he also loved farming along with livestock, hogs, cattle, chickens and more. He was a Director of Tuscaloosa Co. Farmers Federation for more than 40 years. In 1967, he was named Farmer of the Year. He was an honorary member of Block and Bridle Club, Auburn University.Pallbearers are Matthew, Justin and Clint Farmer; Frankie Butler; Bill and Charles Elliott; and John and Raymond Hutchins.Honorary Pallbearers are Bob Howton, Jim Smallwood, Albert Pitts, John McCulley, Bill Webb, Johnny Lemley, Roy Curry, Lyman Hardy, Maria Pizzaro, Glen Smith, employees of Moundville Health and Rehab, and members of East Pointe Church of Christ and Skyland Boulevard Baptist Church.The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and employees for their love and care for the last four years at Moundville Health and Rehab and also to Amedysis Health Care.The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Alzheimer\'s Association.
