
Ronald Carl Quarles “The Q”, age 58, of Tuscaloosa, died June 8, 2010, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Rev. Lou Ann Sellers and Rev. Patrick Laney officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Banks Quarles, Jr., and his brother, Rusty Quarles.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Hamilton Quarles of Tuscaloosa; his daughters, Jessica Leigh Quarles (Matthew B. Aycock) and Jennifer Lauren Quarles (Blake F. Pearson); his sisters-in-law, Paula F. Quarles, Alice H. Smith (Bob Smith), and Noelle Mercurio (Jeff); his brother, Ralph B. Quarles (Kat P. Quarles); his stepmother, Mrs. Banks W. Quarles, Jr.; and his little princess, granddaughter Jasmine Abigail Aycock. He was loved and cherished by his large extended family and many close friends.
Ronnie Quarles was a Tuscaloosa native and strong supporter of his community. He graduated from the University of Alabama and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He was founder of WVUA TV, and before, General Manager of WCFT TV Channel 33, later known as ABC 33/40. His generosity to local charities and non-profits was endless. Under his guidance, WVUA received a Druid Arts Award, which is rarely given to media organizations. He encouraged many people and helped foster numerous careers in broadcasting and media.
Early in his career, he was a videographer and director for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Mr. Quarles was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he coached girls' softball for many seasons. He loved photography and regularly captured imagery for individuals, community organizations and advertising, often volunteering his services for non-profits. His humor, dependability, and belief in his community were well known. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Caples, David Vail, Sean Finegan, Donald Porch, Cam Parsons, and Eddie Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers are Jim Shamburger, Hunter Morris, Bony Barrineau, Jay Bronsen, John Sisty, WTBC 1230 and Jack FM family, and all those who cared for him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to DCH Help and Hope Cancer Center Capital Campaign.
