

Bill was raised in Tuscaloosa County AL and was a graduate of Brookwood High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a corpsman. During his service, he was stationed in San Diego and spent a year in Vietnam, where he was present during the historic Tet Offensive. He was honorably discharged from the Navy and returned to the Birmingham area.
Bill devoted much of his professional life to the medical field, serving others with care and commitment. He also spent several years working in commercial insurance. He eventually retired from a vascular surgery group in the Birmingham area.
He is survived by his former wife Mary Jane Herring, and their sons Jeff Herring and Jason Herring, Jason’s wife Lori Herring and his granddaughters Morgan (Herring) Case, Mollie Herring, and Mia Herring. He is also survived by his brothers Jerry Herring, Jimmy Herring, Kerry Herring, sister Lisa (Herring) Blake and longtime family friend Melvin Vohlken.
He is preceded in death by his father William Elbert Herring, mother Pauline Chapman Herring, sister Glynda (Herring) Pruett and brother Ronald Herring.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday December 27th from 11:30am - 1:00pm, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00pm at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home: 5200 Old Birmingham Hwy, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404. Bill will be laid to rest at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Abernant. In accordance with his final wishes, memorial contributions may be made to any form of cancer research. Donations to the Pleasant Grove Cemetery Fund in his memory would also be especially appreciated.
