Marjorie “Marge” Houston, 83, of Twin Falls passed away in Meridian on January 1, 2011, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born on November 12, 1927 at her grandparents farm house in Falls City (SE of Jerome, ID) to Arthur R. and Dorothy A. Thomason Bird. Marjorie attended elementary school at Falls City School and graduated from Jerome High School in 1946. On August 14, 1949, she married her lifelong friend and high school sweetheart, Robert Edward Houston. After marriage, the couple resided in Jerome where she worked as a bookkeeper at the lumber yard before moving to Twin Falls.
Marge was a contributing member of the Twin Falls community for 60 years. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, member of Pricilla Circle (7), and volunteered countless hours cooking, cleaning and serving dinners for others. Marge belonged to PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter BP, an organization devoted to providing college scholarships for women in need both nationally and at the local level. She volunteered at the Buzz Langdon Visitor Center for several years putting into practice her love and knowledge of Idaho. She was an avid bridge player and played with the same eight friends monthly for 40 years. She enjoyed many years of camping, fishing, traveling, and spending time with Bob, her family and friends. Her travels took her to Mexico, Egypt, Canada, and throughout the U.S.
Marjorie was warm and loving yet witty, nonjudgmental and fiercely independent. She was the perfect complement to her spirited, hard-working, energetic husband Bob of 42 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and friend who was affectionately known as Aunt Margie by her many nieces and nephews. Her gentle smile will be missed by all.
She is survived by her four children of Boise: Ed (Terry) Houston, daughters Huette Susan (Chris) Woerz, Pamela (Tyson) Dietz, and son Houston Dietz; Ray (Joyce) Houston, her daughters Angela (James) McNichols, children Hannah, Cameron, Maggie, and Oliver, and Heidi (Tim) Cullinane and son Logan Cullinane; Janet (Francois) Casabonne, children Nicole (Ben) Geile, Patrick, and Robert; and Greg (Karen) Houston, daughters Heather (Brandon) Larson of Twin Falls and Cheryl. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law: Patsy (Gene) Holsinger of Burley, Elaine (Michael) Phillips of Sun Valley and brother-in-law, Monford Adams of Jerome as well as he beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, infant sister Lorene Bird, sisters Doris Adams and Imogene Saras and her brother Maurice Bird.
The family wishes to extend our appreciation to the administration and staff members at Spring Creek Manor Boise (especially Paula) and Aspen Transitional Rehabilitation Center (Meridian) for their attentive, kind care of our mother and for enduring the demands of Marjorie’s four children while recognizing Mom’s grace and dignity.
