She was born in North Carolina, to Chester and Bertha Campbell. She married Kirkland Corbett on January 10, 1946, in Washington D.C., where both were working at the Pentagon. After moving to Texas, her husband, Kirkland, passed away in 1961. Ethel continued her education, receiving a Master's degree in Education, and taught in the Tyler area for 17 years. In 1967, Ethel married Frank Leatherman and they settled in Tyler, Texas. After Ethel retired from teaching, she loved giving her time volunteering at ETMC, which is now UT Health ETEX, for over 10 years. She is a sister of Alpha Delta Kappa and a member of the Eastern Star. As a master of the home garden, Ethel learned everything in the outdoors. These outdoor lessons have been passed along through her family, and every grandchild knows anything can be cured with castor oil and garlic. She is a life long member of the Methodist Church, where she will always be remembered for bringing cake on Sundays. Ethel will be greatly missed by all who know her. She has left a wonderful mark on her family and friends, as well as her community. She gave freely of herself to a world that rewarded her far too little.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husbands, Kirkland Corbett and Frank Leatherwood; one son, James Corbett.
She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Corbett; one grandson, Kirkland Jerome Corbett; two granddaughters, Wendy Corbett and Susan Corbett; one great-grandson, Kirkland Jerome Corbett Jr.; two great-granddaughters, Angela Corbett Castleberry and Kaycee Corbett Baker; one great-great-grandson, Braxton Lee Castleberry and soon to be Riggin' Wayne Baker; and two great-great-granddaughters, Kinslee Leann Baker and Faith Rosalie Golden, daughter of Kirkland Jerome Corbett Jr.
The family will gather at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, to celebrate her life at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m. Please join the family to share memories, as well as recipes and lessons learned from Ethel over her 92 beautiful years. She loved roses and will forever reside in the presence of the Beautiful Rose of Sharon!
