My mother was Bernice Watrous Rathbone.  She was Verna's cousin.  When my brother Clarence and I were children we used to visit once in a while and I remember Bob and his sense of humor.  The last time I saw him was in 1988 when Uncle Norman and Aunt Merilyn came out from Arizona to visit.  I know he will be greatly missed.  Vernon Rathbone

My sincerest condolences to you.  I remember Bob's jokes so well.  My mother, his cousin Julie, was always so fond of him.  I have a pen and ink drawing that he did of Maple Hill which I treasure.  He was a wonderful person.

I would like to thank your for all your jokes,smiles and laughs. You were an uplifting and positive person to be around. It was like a breath of fresh air. The memories my family and I have of you will never be forgotten. To the story telling between Miguel and yourself. To the love of trains you gave to Brayden. 

I am so proud to call you my grandfather. I am so blessed to have you in my life as I know Miguel and Brayden feel the same.

I could go on and on about what a great man you were, but I would be typing a book if I did.

Dear Verna and family:  Ruth and I send our love to you all as you face this very difficult time in your lives. We send you our condolences and wish we lived nearer so we could be with.  Bob was a dear friend who goes back to the 1930's at the Salem Four Corners. Lots of memories!  Bob was the best friend of my older brother Duncan and they both rode bicycles and sang songs for the neighborhood.  Even in these later years Bob kept me laughing over the phone with his jokes as we often talked between Canada and the U.S.A.  Much love to you all.

Taps have sounded, and we say farewell to a true hero, Bob McCall. But let us not forget and honor the quiet courage of the person who stood behind him all,the years long, his ever faithful wife, Verna,  Surely her devotion, nurturing, nursing, creating and making possible a loving home for Bob and their children, and her unfailing, quiet love, played an invaluable part in helping Bob maintain his joy of life and strength to inspire us all. Dear Verna, Jeffrey, Robert, Robin and all Bob's beloved grandchildren,

Bob was probably the earliest, continuing and most wonderful mentor I have ever known. He was the first and one of the best artists who taught me by example, what it is that counts in life as well as art. Attention to craft, alertness to beauty, respect for the people (and their ways) who have gone before. A love of history. His creativity touched so many, and was a serious but joyful thing, he made beauty and joy and laughter. Bob, whose young life was forever altered by his injury, was the person who helped my mother and father to smile, even in their last days. He is my role model for true greatness. Grace under duress, he always gave so much. Today as I go to the final critiques in the art school where I now teach, it is Bob who is there as always, reminding me that a little humor can take the sting out of a needed criticism, who will help me to consider deeply the personal circumstances of each student and who helps me to push past whatever pain I may be in. I am so grateful, beyond words, for all that Bob McCall brought me, and to  Verna and the children for his care, for the joy they brought to this best of all men.

Bob McCall was a wonderful cousin, starting from the days on our grandfather's farm when he gave me driving lessons in an old Ford in the pastures. He also introduced me to Spike Jones.
