Carol, Colleen, and Family,

I'm saddened to hear of Catherine's death and offer you my sincere condolences.   I consider myself blessed to have ministered to Catherine these past few years.  May she rest in the embrace of a loving and merciful God and may you take comfort in the love and support of family and friends.

I have not only lost my Grandmother, but my best friend. You and Pop gave me joy, laughter and an unconditional love that I will never forget. I had the most amazing childhood because of you. I wish I could close my eyes and go back to one of our weekends on Sunset Place in Whippany. Your imagination made everything magical and fun. I will never forget our hikes at Hacklebarney State Park, all of our road trips where you exposed us to the world around us, our sing-a-longs in the car, playing ping pong and poker for hours on end, and the swing set under the weeping willow tree. You used to tell me that on the weekends, you would wait to get the phone call, "Grandma, would you come get us?" Which of course I would make Denny -- the "baby" -- make, because I figured you couldn't say no to that sweet little voice. Over the past two years, I wished I could transport you and I back in time to our little foursome. How lucky I was to have you and Pop. I remember all sorts of small things. You getting this little bookworm outside to play by sending Denny out front alone. And I would stomp out the front door mad at you, because how could you send the baby outside alone? Now I had to go outside too. I can imagine you giggling as you achieved your goal of getting me outside in the sun. Or how you made a "bird's nest" out of mashed potatoes, and told me how I had to eat the eggs -- peas -- out of that nest or the poor bird that laid them would be sad that they went to waste. How every time I walked through the front door of your house, there would be a new Archie comic book waiting for me.  One of your (and my) favorite memories is Dennis and I putting on shows and ballets in your front hallway as you all sat in Granny's living room. I will never forget you, Pop and Granny laughing so hard that you would all be crying. We loved to make you happy. I remember you forcing me to face my fears. If I was afraid to go on rides at an amusement park, you would coax me until I would do it, proving that I would like it. Afraid to fly on a plane? Let's get on there and see what wonderful sights and experiences wait for us at the other end. Shy? Walk up to that kid over there, say hi and make a new friend. What's the worst that can happen? You pushed me to be better and stronger. And I love you for it. And after I grew up and had children of my own, I had the joy and pleasure of watching you and Pop getting on the ground and sharing your imagination with them. Walks through the "jungle," making tents at the shore house, marching with Mikey around the house like a soldier for what seemed like hours, letting Caroline dress you up and play school with you, sharing your love of nature, walking and being active with them. You said it was like a second chance for you and Pop. You got to do it all again. And you knew how lucky you were as Great-Grandparents to have those experiences. And after Pop passed away, you kept it all going. You were here to walk with me and the kids on their first day of school every year, you never missed their elementary school Halloween parade, and you still came here once a week until you were 90 years old. Everyone told me how lucky I was. And I knew it. These past few years have been very, very hard. You didn't deserve it. But you still taught me how to be strong and brave and keep moving. You worked, drove and maintained your independence into your 90s. You loved this life, and fought hard to stay here. But I pray now you are with your dad, Granny, brothers and sisters, Larry, Pop and Little Denny. I pray that in Heaven you are young again, able to walk, talk and be with everyone you loved. You were my blessing and joy. We were so, so lucky to have you, and I will NEVER forget you and Pop. I will carry you with me everywhere. I love you and will miss you forever. I was truly blessed. Thank you to all the people who made Gram smile over the years -- her best life-long friend Rita Rudy, Sam and Doreen in her younger working days, and lately to the Aides and workers at Brandywine in Watchung and the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. I am afraid to name names for fear of forgetting someone, but Elsie, Norah, Carol Lee, Aminata, Mary, Alicia, Valentina, Keith, Travis, and of course Grandma's other granddaughter Debbie and her husband Al. Debbie, thank you for playing games, coloring, painting her nails with the disco designs and trying to keep her spirits up from the very first day that she got there. She loved you very much! Thank you to all the Aides for your love and kindness. And to my mom -- you are a wonderful daughter who has put in a lot of work over these past 7 or 8 years. Thank you for taking such good care of my grandmother. I love you.
