Born in Georgetown, Guyana in 1932 to parents Mark and Elizabeth Chung, Joseph lived a full life. He moved his family from Guyana in 1970 to start a new life in New Jersey. There, he and Maxime raised three children. They became American citizens in 1976. An accountant by profession, Joe first worked for Esso in Guyana and later Biddle Sawyer in New York, where he retired after 35 years. Joe loved to travel. He particularly enjoyed taking cruises with his wife, dear friends and family.
Joseph was a kind, gentle, loving, determined and fearless soul. He was a man of few words but many loves. In his early years he loved playing table tennis. And everyone who knew him knows how much he loved boxing. On any given day, Joe could be found either watching a match on TV or shadow boxing one in his living room.
Joseph is survived by the love of his life, Maxime, his wife of 61 years. He’s also survived by daughter Esther Ponce, son-in-law Raul Ponce, sons Neil Chung and Mark Chung; granddaughters Julia Vicidomini and Ana Ponce; grandson Chris Ponce; grandson in law Marc Vicidomini; great grandsons Christopher Davis, Brandon Ponce, and Nicholas Vicidomini; sister Elsie Castanheiro; brother Samuel Chung and nieces including Merlene Weithers and Francine Cooley and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation can be made in Joseph’s memory to: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or American Diabetes Association.
