On February 10th, at the age of 96, Rea Mahon passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at the Center For Hope in Scotch Plains, NJ. Rea was born on November 5, 1929, in Wisconsin to Mr. and Mrs. Erwin and Johanna Augenstein. Rea later moved to Irvington, New Jersey, before settling in Union with her beloved husband John Mahon where she proudly resided for 57 years.
Rea dedicated many years of her life to working in Communications at Overlook Hospital, where her steady presence and kind voice connected countless people each day. After a long and meaningful career, she retired, leaving behind friendships and memories that lasted a lifetime.
Rea had an amazing smile that could truly light up a room. Her warmth was felt instantly by everyone she met. She also had a wonderful sense of humor — quick-witted, playful, and always ready with a remark that would make those around her laugh. Even in life’s quieter moments, she brought lightness and joy to her family and friends.
Above all else, she was a devoted and loving mother to her four sons, Jack, Kevin, Michael, and Christopher. Her family was her greatest pride and joy. She treasured family vacations at the Jersey Shore, summers spent at the Union Elks, and could often be found enjoying one of her favorite books or watching a Hallmark movie. Nothing brought her more happiness than being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose lives she touched with unconditional love, warmth, and wisdom.
Rea is predeceased by her parents Erwin and Johanna Augenstein, her husband John Mahon, her brother Rolf Augenstein, and her beloved son Michael Mahon. She is survived by her loving sons Jack, Kevin (Donna), and Christopher (Linda); her grandchildren Matthew (Tina), Vincent, Kevin (Daniela), Danielle (Anthony), Christopher, and Kaitlyn; and her great-grandchildren Ryley, Kaylyn, Jordana, and Nicholas. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Shirley Augenstein and cousin Dorthy Principe.
Rea’s legacy of strength, kindness, humor, and devotion to her family will live on in all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
A visitation will be held at McCracken Funeral Home, located at 1500 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083, on February 17, 2026, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
