Steve was born in Galicia, Ukraine and later settled in Hillside, NJ, where he has resided for the last 65 years. Steve was a tool & die maker employed at Jabel Incorporated in Irvington, NJ, a manufacturer of die-struck jewelry. He worked for Jabel for 39 years, retiring in 1990.
Steve was the beloved husband of Alina Herb and the late Gisele Herb, devoted father of Steven and his wife, Susan Herb, and Robert and his wife, Sally Pettit, loving grandfather of Steven, Brandon, Alexander and Gisele Herb, dear brother of Julia Hachlica, Stasia Helbig and the late Wasyl “Bill” Hryb. Steve is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, stepchildren, grandchildren and a great-granddaughter in Poland.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Third Degree Knight, and was very active in the Hillside community throughout the years. He was proud to serve on the Hillside Historical Society. Steve was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena RCC and often served as a greeter and usher. As a young man, he played violin during live broadcasts on the local Newark radio station, WBGO. He enjoyed spending time with his family on vacations, a long day at the beach, bike riding and listening to his polka music. Truly a family man.
The family will receive their friends at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Avenue Union, NJ, on Sunday, May 12, 2024 from 1-4 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1000 North Broad Street Hillside, NJ, on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park Union, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1000 North Broad Street Hillside, NJ, 07205, in memory of Steve Herb.
