Aagje van Olden

Rancho Cucamonga – Aagje (nee Algra) passed away peacefully of old age in her home on the early morning of March 29, 2022 at 93 years of age. She was born February 16, 1929 in Tjimahi, West Java, Dutch East Indies now known as Indonesia. Aagje is one of the last two van Olden’s from her generation in this country and she will be missed. She was the daughter of Aan and Anna (Lasut) Algra, sister Eelkje Algra and brother Henkie Algra who preceded her in death. Soon after WWII she met and married Johan Frederik van Olden July 19, 1950 in Surabaja, East Java, Indonesia. Looking for a safer and better life, the couple left Indonesia with three kids in tow for the Netherlands August 23, 1954 and settled there. Deciding that the Dutch winters were not for her, they now with four kids in tow decided to immigrate again but to the United States of America. Arriving in New York City July 31, 1959 then finally settling in Southern California. There they raised their six children. Aagje is survived by her husband Johan of 71 years, daughter Sylvia Maria (Nancy Garrison) van Olden, son Hans Albert (Sandy) van Olden, daughter Joan Catharina (Mike) Tynes, son Rene Alexander (Annette †) van Olden, son John Frederick (Adriana div) van Olden and son Mark Anthony (Lisa div) van Olden. She had many Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Aagje cherished and loved all of her children beyond measure and loved her Grand and Great Grandchildren without bounds. She also had many, many friends, mostly from the old days when she and Johan lived in Indonesia. Because of travel she became fluent in three languages, Bahasa Indonesia, Dutch and English. At times she would use all three while speaking. The family moved to several different locations while in Southern California; when we first arrived in the states it was in downtown Los Angeles, then Pasadena, Valinda, Riverside and finally Rancho Cucamonga. Aagje loved the outdoors she would travel and vacation in the National Parks when she could. She also had a great love for gardening, flowers and plants. She would wear her gardening tools down to the nub she loved it so much. Some of her other favorite hobbies were listening to music and playing the occasional slot machine (we believe her only vice).

A visitation for Aagje will be held Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Stone Funeral Home, 355 East 9th Street, Upland, CA 91786. A funeral service will occur Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 355 East 9th Street, Upland, CA 91786. A graveside service will occur Thursday, April 28, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Live Oak Memorial Park, 200 E Duarte Road, Monrovia, CA 91016.
