At the age of 13, Doug was awarded the “Safety Cup” by the Governor of Michigan in 1943 and later became an Eagle Scout with Troop 109. He Graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1948 and from Western Michigan University in 1954 with a BA in Science. He continued his education and received a Master of Arts.
Doug served in the Air Force Reserves at Selfridge and Briggs AFB from 1950-1954. He was honorably discharge as an Airmen 1st class.
He began his teaching career as a high school teacher, then was promoted to Principal at the Andrews School in Michigan. He journeyed with his family from the mid-west to Montclair California in 1960 to continue his teaching career. This began with Emerson Jr High and then continued to the Bonita School District where he was principal at Ramona Junior High and Lone Hill Junior High. He retired from full-time teaching in 1990, yet continued to teach at Webb School and Oak Tree Day School for several more years.
Doug is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carmen; his sister, Mary Couper; and sister-in-law, Pat Halverson as well as 3 children; Doug Halverson (Shelley), Kathi Halverson, and David Halverson (Cathy), and 4 step-children, Al Arrosagary (Renee), Martin Arrosargary, Jacquie Harris, and Karen Vasquez (Daniel). He was a beloved grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; brothers, Philip and Stuart Halverson; son, Joseph Halverson; and grandson, Joey Halverson.
Doug was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, and a member of LeRoy Boys Home and Bonita Unified School’s PTA. He had many hobbies. He was a fierce Tennis player and loved building his HO model trains for his grandchildren’s enjoyment. He also performed with the Claremont Chorale.
Doug was a man of many talents that lived his life to the fullest, he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
