Jack peacefully passed away at home with family on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from natural causes following a long and distinguished life. He was the oldest in a family of six children, being born on July 3, 1929 in Upland, CA to Alta Loma residents Marion and Velma Stoebe. He attended Chaffey High School as part of its Class of ’47, before becoming a highly decorated and heroic US Army veteran in the Korean War. While in combat in ’51, he was severely wounded and summarily awarded the Purple Heart and other medals. He met Colleen O’Bryon from Upland in ’49 while she was visiting a friend in Alta Loma near the home of one of Jack’s friends. Following Jack’s return from the war, Colleen convinced him it was in his best interest that they rekindle their relationship. They had been happily married for 68 years prior to Colleen’s passing last year and raised three children together: Renee Schiller (Fred), Gary Stoebe, and Steve Stoebe (Sharon). He had 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jack became a refrigeration engineer in the early ’60s and worked 30 years for the State of CA on its hospital HVAC systems. He had a lifelong love of classic cars and hot rods, sports (especially baseball, bowling, and golf), and all things challenging to the brain of an engineer. He will be remembered for his neighborly kindness, his unerring memory of “the good ol’ days” (especially of historic Alta Loma), his building and electrical skills, and his willingness to help anyone in need. He is survived by his children Renee and Steve, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, brother Robert (Claudia), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Colleen, son Gary, great-granddaughter Evangeline, brothers Richard, Jerry, and Pete, and sister Marlene. A graveside service with full military honors will be held Monday, July 3, 2023 from 10:30-11:00 am at Riverside National Cemetery (Sec 64) where he will be interred with Colleen. This funeral service is open to all family and friends of the Stoebes. Condolences may be sent to the family via email at [email protected].
