Joanne Thompson Cummings entered this world on August 14, 1951. Wesley and Ethel Thompson were truly blessed the day she was born. She was born and raised in Los Angeles CA. Joanne spent her childhood surrounded by eight siblings. As a child you could often find her helping her parents in their restaurant. While she enjoyed helping in the restaurant her ultimate dream was to become a nurse. As a teenager she served as a candy striper and volunteer in several hospitals. While attending college at California State University Northridge, Joanne met Earl Cummings Jr. They were married in June of 1977. Joanne was blessed with three children, two daughters, Jennifer and Kristin, and one son, Mychal. She later attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College where she achieved of her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. Joanne worked as a nurse for over 40 years. She touched the lives of so many during her time as an emergency room nurse at Pomona Valley Hospital and Kaiser. She was dedicated to her career and continued her education while working. She returned to school in 1995 and earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. Joanne was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She was a doting nana to her six grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She would always say that running after her grandchildren was her exercise for the day and kept her moving. Joanne lived a live full of laughter and compassion. She was blessed with the “gift of gab” and could speak to anyone, anywhere, at any time. On any given day she could be on the phone with friends or family for hours whether it was for a good laugh or to discuss the latest soap opera episode. Her gregarious and kind nature led to long lasting and vibrant relationships with family and friends. She was the person you called you needed advice, a good laugh, a place to vent, prayer or a shoulder to cry on. When she wasn’t chasing after grandkids, she stayed on the move taking numerous cruises, camping, shopping and of course going to the LA county fair. She first attended service at Abundant Living Family Church in 2011 and instantly knew she had found her home. She was a faithful servant of God, volunteering as the director of the Young at Heart senior group for several years and volunteering her time and her heart to the church. The lord called her home on April 25, 2023. She will be deeply missed but her memory and impact will live on. Joanne leaves to cherish her memory, her loving children, Jennifer, Mychal and Kristin; her grandchildren Kailee, Christopher, Andrew, McKenzie, Dominic and Aaliyah; her siblings William, Tommy and Edith as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
