Sam passed away peacefully in the morning of December 9th, one month shy of his
95th birthday .
He was born in Van Nuys, California, to Samuel Abraham and Carmen Violet Nicolson Howe, their third child and first son. They were part of the growing Nicolson clan, each member doing their part and supporting one another. Service and a strong work ethic were deeply instilled in him.
He worked at Gilman’s Hot Springs while attending San Jacinto High School. He met Dorothy Christie there when her family moved to San Jacinto. They married on June 2nd, 1943.
The Army Air Corps was his next home as he trained and became a Gunner Sargent. He served with his squadron in England until they returned home on the Queen Mary in July of 1945.
He hired on with California Electric Co., “Calectric” based in Riverside. He worked lighting up California with his family in tow until 1949 and kindergarten in West Riverside.
He and Dorothy bought a piece of land on LimoniteAve. and built their first home where they lived until he took a position in Palm Springs. Blythe followed, then Tonopah. They built their second house together in Tonopah. Edison brought them to Monrovia and they built their last house in Upland among orange trees on Emerson St.
He loved to travel, fishing many rivers and streams of the West, teaching the kids to be patient and quiet!
He enjoyed many years of service with the Rotary Club, participating in international health and educational projects, fund raisers and conventions.
His Aunt Ellen and Uncle Bill Lundquist introduced many of the family to water skiing and when he got a boat, the Colorado River at Blythe and Cottonwood Cove Lake Mohave we’re family favorites.
Dorothy passed from cancer in 1997. He married Barbara Beach later that year.
They continued traveling with Rotary, attending jazz festivals, family visits and Thursday nights’ Baldy Mountain Boys at The Press.
After Barbara passed, Toby and Rocket, their little dogs, were his comfort and constant companions.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, his son and daughter-in-law, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 6 grandchildren,14 great grandchildren, 3 great great children, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
