Spencer Hardy Myles III was born in Los Angeles, Ca on March 24th, 1964 to Evelyn & Spencer Myles. He grew up in the valley and attended Canterbury Elementary School in Arleta, El Oro Way Elementary School, Frost Middle School & Kennedy High School in Granada Hills. Little did he know at the time but his future wife was living in Arleta as well, had attended Canterbury a year before him but the same year as his oldest sister, and she lived on the block he would always play on with a boy they both played with at different times, and that lived across the street from Dolly. Their paths were destined.
When Spencer was in high school, he took the GED and was sent a letter saying he passed and was one of the top 10 in California. He also attended Western College and received a degree in Telecommunications in 1984 and he attended Pierce College from 1989-1990 to further his career with The City of Los Angeles.
Spencer was a smart and bright child. He excelled in music and he played many instruments. He loved to take things apart to see how they worked and would often tell his mom, "I'm doing a scientific experiment, mom." He was very curious and needed to know how things worked. He also loved to share as a child. He was very loving and giving and that carried on into adulthood, as many of us know. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He helped people he knew and some he didn't and always had a few dollars or some change for anyone asking that he met on the street or in front of a store. That was one of his greatest qualities, his giving heart.
As Spencer got older, he was a fast study, still curious, only on a larger level. He often taught himself how to do things like work on cars, program a computer, play music by ear and he could make something out of something else, often earning him the name "McGuyver" by those who witnessed this. Like taking a ceiling fan & connecting it to a shower curtain rod, wiring it and he standing it on its side with the rod holding it in place from the ceiling to the floor. It pushed air through the entire apartment that had one a/c wall unit. It was pretty genius! He had people interested in buying one, like the owners of the building, even though it was just a gadget he created to keep the house cool. Many people thought it was an airplane propeller! Or the time he had to do a quick fix on the car late one night when the clutch cable broke. He pulled the cable through the baseboard of the car and had Dolly pull it to shift gears as he drove the car a couple of miles to the church mother's house. One of his last projects that he made was a table saw out of a handsaw so he could saw wood pieces (blade sticking up & out, but able to swing down) to fix a door. He wanted to be able to cut the wood like they do in a lumber store! That thing was dangerous! He would often take things apart to see how they worked and most times had pieces left over but would swear you didn't need them, like the time he took his sister Gidgette's car apart to fix it and had a whole cup of bolts left over. He didn't know why he had so many left but the car ran!! If you had a problem with something, as many of us know, he would find a way to fix or finagle it! From cars to appliances to electrical issues, he found a way! It was always amazing to see the ideas in his head come to fruition.
Spencer was living in Granada Hills as a teenager working at Jack-In-The-Box where he met a few guys and they all started hanging out. They would hang out at the house of one of the guys who had quite a few siblings and their friends would hang out too. This is where he met his future wife, Dolly, in 1980. They started dating in 1982. He was 17 and she was 18. He took pictures of her the first night they met, later telling her he loved her long hair. He also played the piano for her, 'Easy Like Sunday Morning' by The Commodores. He impressed her. They hung out with their friends a lot over the next couple of years. They went to the arcades, clubs like The Ozone and The Tap, Santa Monica Pier and the beach. Their first time on the pier together, Spencer had a boom box and he played 'Forget Me Nots', which became one of "their songs" along with 'Fire and Desire', 'Happy' and 'For the Lover In You'. Also, there was always a party to go to, and it was at this time they started DJing with one of their friends.
They had their first child, a daughter, Latoya Elizabeth Cordova Myles, now Rodriguez, in May, 1984. They were married on February 14th,1985 on Santa Monica Pier. Their second child, Heather Nikole Cordova Myles, was born in April, 1989, then Spencer Hardy Myles IV in October, 1990 and Steven Nikolas Cordova Myles in March, 1995. They raised their family in Van Nuys, Sun Valley, Granada Hills and Northridge. Spencer and Dolly celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary this last Valentine's Day. They knew each other 44 years and were together 42 of those years.
Spencer loved children and always wanted a big family. He was blessed with what he wanted most the last 10 years of his life. Grandchildren!! His son Spencer IV and his fiance, Wendy, gave him the precious gifts of Stella Elizabeth Myles (2) and Spencer Hardy Myles V (5 mons), his namesake. He loved his babies and was so thrilled and proud to finally be a Grampy! He was also fortunate enough to be blessed with a bonus grandson, Heather's stepson with Joe, Christian Jacob Basulto. (15)
Spencer and Dolly also helped raise and nurture some of the neighborhood kids when they lived in Van Nuys on Haskell and Saticoy. The apartment was always full of kids, many had single or working parents, so the kids would always go over and hang out. Soon they started having homework time after school, snacks, video games, Disney sing-a-longs, and other activities like Boot Camp in the summer. Dolly would help with art projects or essays and she and the girls would often cook dinner for everyone. Spencer would run around with the boys and quite a few of them picked up his love of BBQ'ing and still use the skills he taught them or they watched him perfect over time. There were Nerf gun fights, water balloon and water hose fights. Even toilet water got added into the mix one time! Video games were big and a couple of times Spencer had 3 or 4 consoles connected in the apartment, upstairs, downstairs and the porch so all the kids could play. Once in a while there was an outing like to the movies or the park to ride the paddle boats. Spencer would also buy all the kids in the complex ice cream if they were out when the ice cream man showed up. He was a father figure to many and very much loved. The kids all grew up together and were all close and consider themselves brothers and sisters to this day. Distance didn't matter as the kids moved and grew up and had families of their own. They were and still are, family. Spencer was as proud of them as he was his own kids.
Spencer started working for The City of Los Angeles, Department of Sanitation, in 1987. He worked at the Hyperion Plant from about 1993-1995 and in the early 2000's, moved to the Department of Transportation (DOT), where he became a Traffic Officer and held that position till he retired in October 2021. He worked for The City of Los Angeles for thirty-four years.
Spencer was saved late last year and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior! He was happy in the Lord and loved gospel music and would often watch church service at home with Dolly. They would watch gospel videos of music he grew up singing to in church or faith-based movies. One of his best memories was playing drums in a concert at his sister's school, Biola University. He loved to play, be it drums, piano, a bass guitar, it didn't matter. He was especially happy playing gospel music, using his gifts and talents to praise the Lord with song.
In the last few years of his life, Spencer was cared for by his wife and kids and nothing comforted him more than spending quality time watching movies with his grandkids and playing with his dog Raider and grand-puppies Summer, Veruka and Simba. Veruka was his baby and emotional support for the last 2 years. She stayed by his side night and day and could often be found sharing a meal from his plate or being fork fed by him. He was very attached to her and they shared a special bond since she was a puppy. She still sits by his chair, sometimes curled around the base of it, waiting for him to come home. She misses him a lot.
Spencer was loved by all and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in Heavenly Paradise.
*Babe, I'll love you Forever, my Endless Love. You will always be my Fire & Desire. You made me Happy. - Love, Dolly
