at George Derby Care Home in Burnaby at the age of 104 years.
Bertha was born and raised in Regina, Sask., where she lived happily with
her parents, brother and sister until age 20, when she moved Westward
to Vancouver with her sister Emma as they sought employment during
the difficult depression years.
In 1938 Bertha met Emil Schmidt, a Tailor and Furrier and they were
married in June of that year. Emil and Bertha were blessed with two sons,
Rodger and Kenneth, and a daughter, Dianne, an Angel, whom God called
home after only 3 months on this earth.
Bertha worked for many years in factories, lumber mills, a real estate
office and finally for The Vancouver School Board where she was
employed as a Matron at Killarney Secondary until her retirement.
During her retirement, she was an active volunteer, fundraising for Camp
Luther and working at the Union Gospel Mission thrift store. Bertha also
enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles and writing letters to the Editors of
our local newspapers.
She was a member of Martin Luther Church for most of her life and tried
her best to never miss a Sunday. She made and kept a great number of
dear friends who blessed her with visits and news from the church when
she was no longer able to attend services.
Bertha was predeceased by her parents, Ferdinand and Emilie, Dearly
loved siblings, Frank and Emma, Precious children, Kenneth and Dianne,
and former husband Emil.
Survived by her dear son Rodger and wife Emily, 2 precious grandchildren,
Diane (John) and Alan. 3 dearly loved great-grandchildren, Jackson,
Nicholas and Brynn. Many much loved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear
friends.
