It is with great sadness that the family announces that Charlie passed away peacefully with his beloved wife and best friend Dorothy by his side. He is survived by his children John(Mary), Cathy(Julian),Carrie(Neil) and his treasured grandchildren Morgan(Trevor),David, Kevin(Jaime) McConville. Ally and Gordy Noel, Barbara(Andrew) and Leslie Culbard. Great Grandchildren Isla and Hunter Brice, and Teagan Lee. He is survived by his sisters, Shirley, Margaret, Patsy and brother Jay. He was predeceased by his first wife Barbara and sister Louise. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews, especially John Laudrum.
Charlie was born and raised in Vancouver, went to McGee and UBC. After UBC, he started his career as an investigator with the Department of National Revenue. He joined Alberta Distillers as Comptroller in 1954, became a Director in 1958, Executive Vice President in 1963. He then decided to change industries and joined the Peter Bawden Drilling Company in Calgary. In 1968 he returned to Vancouver and rejoined Alberta Distillers as President on March 1 of that year. He remained President until taking early retirement in 1988. Charlie received the Gold Medal Award from the Chairman of National Distillers in New York as Man of the Year in 1974 for his outstanding leadership and contribution he made to the success of Alberta Distillers.
Charlie was a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC. He was on the Board of St. Paul's Hospital and Chairman from 1971-1974. He received the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal for service performed as Past Chairman of the Hospital. He was on the Board of the HLRA.
Retirement was a special time of world travel with golf, and time spent with his grandchildren and then his great grandchildren whom he adored. Charlie took great interest in his grandchildren's careers, while they sought out his endless wisdom.
A celebration of Charles's life will be held on September 24th at 1PM at the Unitarian Church at 49th and Oak, Vancouver.
