My earliest memory of Uncle Clarence was of receiving rides to and from kindergarten (especially on rainy and snowy days!). 

I would receive advice on how to ask for things in English in the classroom, or in Canada in general, much as I imagine he would have done for all the sibling families that came to Canada one by one in the 70’s.  

I will remember him with much affection and admiration for being able to embrace with ebullience the hardships of the immigrant experience of that generation. They don’t make them like Uncle Clarence anymore. 



It's never easy losing someone you love... But what is easy is remembering how Uncle Clarence pretty much defined what an Uncle should be.

He was always so kind and accommodating to us kids whenever we visited and he loved to fill the room with laughter and smiles by telling his off-the-wall jokes and stories.

I'll never forget how in the summertime he would always check to make sure the fan was keeping you cool and at Thanksgivings and Christmases he would never let your cup or stomach go empty. This was easy, of course, because he had Auntie in the kitchen (cooking up a storm) backing him up. 

"Have more food, have more, have more. Do you want more pop? Are you sure you don't want more? Are you full?" he would say until you proved your pants no longer fit.

Holidays were always epic when they were hosted at "Winston & Ivan's house" (our cool, older cousins).

Then there was Uncle Clarence's VHS movie collection. Without access to that, I would have never realized that Sean Connery was the best James Bond. Till this day, every time I see Sean Connery in action - I'm reminded of my Uncle Clarence.

We all have our own personal stories about Uncle Clarence and we will all miss him so very much, but he will live on in Winston's quiet leadership; Ivan's jokester nature; and even in Bruce's sweet sincerity.

Uncle Clarence deserves the utmost respect and after a lifetime of making others around him comfortable and happy - it's time heaven does the same for him.

Uncle Clarence was a very kind man. My earliest memories of him are when I was a child. Uncle Clarence had visited us in Toronto, Ontario one year. He used to take me to the mall and convenient store and spoiled me with candy and Barbie dolls despite my parents’ objections.  Needless to say, he was my favourite uncle.

After he left Toronto, I cried. Knowing I missed and adored him, he would send me gifts and write me every so often to update me on how he was doing and the working conditions he endured while working in the Canadian mines. I remember being so happy every time I would receive letters from him. His penmanship was exquisite, he was very well spoken and his letters were always so well written. I would write back to ask how he was and he would always without fail reply. 

It would be years until I had the opportunity to meet Uncle Clarence again and it was not until I was in my 20s that I finally made it to Vancouver, BC. As expected, I was greeted with much hospitality, joy, love and laughter.  His favourite line at the time was “It’s hilarious!”  Uncle Clarence was also a great story teller. He would always make you laugh.

Uncle Clarence, you will always hold a special place in my heart. May God bless you, keep you safe and may you Rest In Peace.

Lots of great early childhood memories spent with Uncle, Aunt and Winston and Ivan, especially the 1980s. So I’m glad I had the experience growing up with your family, in a bit of a universe outside my parents. To me, Uncle was a jovial and funny guy. We will miss him, the loss of him feels like the end of an era. Sending you all peace and sympathy.
