Demetrios Venetsanos

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved, Demetrios (Jim) Venetsanos. He was born on February 4, 1942, in Sofiko, Korinthias, Greece, and passed away peacefully on December 20, 2023, at the age of 81 years, surrounded by his loving family.

Demetrios was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 56 years, Margarita (his “loukoumaki”), a beloved father to his sons, Angelo (Rosa) and Peter, and a loving grandfather to his adoring grandchildren, Dimitri, Margherita and Eva.

Demetrios is also survived by his sister, Marina Gerzelis, brothers-in-law, Steve Kletas (Georgia), John Kletas (Anastasia) and Pantelis Kletas (Sophia), sisters-in-law, Margarita Venetsanos, Panagiota Venetsanos, Maria Kletas, Katerina Papafilis, and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends in Canada, Australia and Greece. He was predeceased by his brothers, Panagiotis Venetsanos and Christos Venetsanos, his sisters-in-law, Asimina Angelou, Marigoula Malandrenis, and brothers-in-law, Christos Kletas and Takis Kletas.

Demetrios immigrated to Canada in December 1968, coming with very little and with the hope of building a bright future for himself and his family. Demetrios was extremely hardworking both at home and at Bert’s Restaurant where he worked for over 30 years. He will always be remembered by his smile, his humour, his laughter, his cooking and for his love and dedication to his family. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him.

A funeral service for Demetrios will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Georges Greek Orthodox, 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver, BC V6J 4A2. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC V5G 3M1.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the BC Cancer Foundation in Demetrios' memory.
