So sorry to hear that Denis has passed on.  Was always one of my favourite instructors.  Brilliant man, got me hooked on Miles, and told stories about his life, educated us on jazz while really pushing proper drawing skills.  Still have his notes in storage.  I loved the fact he stood up to the ridiculously politically correct.  He was his own man.  Made some fabulous art in his career.  Was lucky to attend his retrospective show downtown Vancouver and see some of his earlier work.  Condolences to the family.  THere will never be another Denis!

Dennis was my instructor in my first year at Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1985. He was an excellent painter and drawer, kept consummate sketchbooks which he displayed all around his classroom, and believed in the craftsmanship of drawing. I probably worked harder in his class than in any other. His stylized images of women's garters (and women in them) from below, above, or at the craziest angles are some of his best-known work. Dennis told us they were inspired by the Sears catalogues that were delivered to his rural home when he was a boy, their undergarment section containing the most revealing imagery of the female form that he had ever seen.

My first life drawing sessions ever were in Dennis's drawing class. He always put on music, mostly jazz, and chatted with the models, which put us nervous newbies at ease. His obliquely worded assignments, such as "draw a sleeping animal", could produce a wide range of fascinating interpretations. And despite an asthmatic student's complaint, Dennis kept smoking in the classroom while ranting about the "philistines" in the school administration who were thinking of actually banning smoking from the entire school. Yes, it was a different era.

I had great respect for his teaching  and his inquisitive, independent mind. Goodbye Dennis.

Dennis Burton was a complex and intriguing man and a great artist. He could draw like an angel, and his habitual notation and illustration of events and facts rendered in  calligraphic brush strokes make his sketchbooks comparable to Leonardo's. His creativity embraced many forms bridging the visual arts and music- the latter largely jazz, an improvizational form which characterized his entire life. We will miss his creativity, and unique worldview and his great sesne of humour and the absurd. A great man posing as a bad boy and loving every minute.

On behalf of the Emily Carr Faculty Association, I offer deep condolences. Dennis was a man of great talent, integrity and creativity, and is remembered as such by his colleagues and friends.

One of my favourite teachers from Emily Carr. He taught me to break the mould and hold my ground. I've carried this through my whole career.

Dennis was a long-time teacher at Emily Carr and I've heard from a number of alumni that they were saddened to learn of his passing and how he inspired them. I wish to express my condolences to his family and friends.

Denis was an extraordinary teacher. He never forgot that every artist needs a solid grounding in the fundamentals of drawing and painting before moving on to a personal vision.

To a great man and a great teacher, one of the true fathers of Canadian avant-garde painting. I had the pleasure of studying under him in the Vancoouver School of Art in '79 and went on to continue my painting education with his encouragement, at Toronto's Art's Sake Inc., that he initiated and set up with some of Canada's best visual artists. Thank you Dennis for all your help, you will always be in my heart.

We are so proud to have had Denis as a part of the Pickering College family and so sorry to hear of his passing. Our entire school community sends along our condolences and prayers.

Hi Susan, met Denis when he and my Dad were roommates in hospital.  Really enjoyed meeting Denis and appreciated his bon vivant attitude though he and Dad were both facing serious health challenges.  Remember reading a book out loud to my Dad about the Middle East and when I was trying to either pronounce an Arab word and/or tried to expound on the text in the book, Denis would chime in with the correct pronounciation and/or detail which would made things clearler for my Dad.  This in turn led me to do some research on Denis' background.  Having little to no knowledge about art it was eye opening to find out Dad was sharing a room with a North American (if not international), icon.  Wow!!! It was also a pleasure having the opportunity to meet you in the hospital and hear a little about the life the adventures you and Denis shared.  You are remarkable woman and he was a remarkable man.  My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Denis and your families during this difficult time.  Take Care.
