Sheila was born in Sydney Nova Scotia. She spent her early childhood on Cape Breton Island with her grandparents and mother. And she learned to speak Gaelic!
From Cape Breton Island Sheila moved to Victoria BC, where she lived until the end of WW2. She attended St Ann’s Academy, was a gifted student, was active in sports and the arts, and was an accomplished writer. Sheila graduated from St Ann’s at 16 years of age and was offered a full scholarship from Washington State University. Due to family circumstances, plus the outbreak of WW2, Sheila was not able to attend Washington State.
Rather quickly after graduating from St Ann’s, Sheila was hired as a civilian by the Canadian Navy and was assigned to work directly for the Admiralty. Her war years were spent working out of the Esquimalt Shipyards.
Shortly after the end of WW2 Sheila met her future husband, Sandy Perry. Sandy and Sheila were married in September 1946. They resided in Sicamous BC from 1947 to 1969, and thereafter lived in Kelowna BC. Sandy passed away in November 2010.
Sheila moved into a Long Term Care residence, in Burnaby, in July 2020 and passed peacefully in December 2022.
Sheila and Sandy are survived by their 5 children: Reg (Jeanette), Eileen, Michael (Carla), Mary Lynn (Craig), and Laurel (Ted); plus 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.vancouvercrematorium.com for the Perry family.
