Kevin was born on the 18th of July 1949 in Cranbrook, BC to Myra Ellen (nee Woolrich) and Henry (Harry) Aurthur Haynes, as a younger brother to Larry. Kevin grew up and was schooled in Cranbrook, finishing high school in Revelstoke after a family move. The early classes at UBC didn’t suit him well so after a year in Engineering he ventured out, working at labour jobs until completing his Electrical Ticket at BCIT in 1979. His first job as a Journeyman Electrician was at Howe Sound Pulp and Paper on the Sunshine Coast. Though planning to stay only a year, Kevin retired from this job after 30 years in 2009, before his 60th birthday. Kevin was an avid sportsman but golf was his sport of choice. Starting as a Junior at age 12, Kevin continually worked on his game until his last round on December 29, 2019. He too was an avid game and card player, with backgammon, poker and crib as mainstays in his life.
In 2003 Kevin went from confirmed bachelor to “single, but unavailable” when he met Sandi, the love of his life and the lady who made him - ”unavailable”. Together they travelled to the corners of the earth golfing along the way. Their shared winter home, on the Blythe Golf Course in California, was where they were happiest and the location of Kev’s final round.
Kevin passed away peacefully the morning of January 24, 2020 after a short but fierce battle with acute myeloid leukemia surrounded by Larry, Cris and Sandi. He will be missed by many friends but especially - Pat Thompson, Dave Lukey, Nerio DeRosa and Frank Harrison, the 4 cornerstones of Kevin’s life, providing long and enduring friendship with endless support. Frank, Colin and Howie will also miss Kevin in their triweekly golf foursome, though perhaps their wallets will be a bit thicker.
Kevin is survived by his partner Sandi VandenBrink, her parents Tony & Kay, her brothers Paul (Leah) and Stephen (Eleanor), nephew Conrad and niece Jade. He is also survived by his only sibling, brother Larry (Cris Clark), nephew Wade and Shane, nieces Carrie, Lesley, Jennifer and Ann, and great nephew Andrew. Many friends and extended family will miss this quiet, kind, competitive, honourable and gentle man with a subtle sense of humour.
A celebration of Kevin’s life will be held where he golfed most often, the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club, in better golf weather. (Details will follow when available.) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Junior Golf in your locale or the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club or alternately a charity of your choice. Details for Kevin’s “Celebration of Life” will be updated on the Dignity Memorial website as they become available.
