Lynda Cumming was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie by Bella and Scott Cumming. She shared her childhood with three brothers – Lynn, Lee and Lorry and three male cousins.
She wasted no time after high school moving to Montreal, ostensibly to learn French. After two years there, living in a monster Victorian house with tons of other young people, and enjoying the delights of Expo 67 (plus picking up a modicum of French), she headed to Vancouver.
Here, she continued her “career” as a legal secretary and soon met Lawrence Lott, with whom she lived for 12 years. She shared a dream to travel through Europe, so they both quit their jobs, flew to Europe, bought a van, and spent the next year touring just ab out every country on the continent, plus Morocco, Israel and Egypt.
Upon returning to Vancouver, she realized that she needed a more interesting career, as she planned not to have kids and work for the next 40 years. A two-year journalism program at Langara College did the trick.
Upon graduation she worked for the Richmond Review and then Surrey Delta Messenger in downtown Whalley. Those four years were followed by three years teaching publication production at the Native Communications Society.
She then landed a job as a reporter for a travel trade publication, a weekly that was distributed to travel agents across the country. She did that for 25 years. It was a challenging position, but one that afforded her an opportunity to travel to some of the most out-of-the-way posts in the world, such as Lapland, Iceland, the Great Barrier Reef, and Moscow.
It was on one of these media trips to Cuba that she met Dave McCormick, a broadcaster from Vancouver. They spent the next 14 years living a full life—travelling, laughing and loving.
Lynda was also somewhat of a jock, although she would be the first to admit, not a very skilled one. She played softball and volleyball, and once she go too old for those, she switched to golf and curling.
A Celebration of Life for Lynda will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
