Mary Olive Furseth (nee Aylard) passed away peacefully at home on September 30th in the presence of family. In her 96 years, she had many roles: big sister, grass hockey star, student, teacher, hockey fan, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and volunteer.
Born in Victoria in 1927, she spent her youth in Victoria and summers at Shawnigan Lake, completed her studies at Oregon State College, and taught in Port Alberni before moving to Kamloops and marrying Bob Furseth in 1962 after a ‘whirlwind four year courtship’.
Mary was particularly active at the ‘Y’ in Kamloops, working on supporting immigrants and new mothers in the 1970s, and promoting activity at the then-new pool and exercise facilities in the 1980s.
She leaves behind her sons Don (Parvaneh) and Gerry (Peggy), three grandchildren, and her youngest brother Derek Aylard (Denise). She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, and brother, Bruce. In 2015 she moved to Vancouver to be closer to her grandchildren.
Mary lived an active life, camping, biking, and cross country skiing with the family, and was known for her generosity of spirit and determined energy.
Please donate to the Red Cross or your charity of choice in lieu of flowers.
