

Mary Chieko Welt, aged 79, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2023, at Surrey Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 29, 1943, in Slocan, BC to her beloved parents, Haruye and Seiichi.
Mary was a remarkable woman whose life was filled with love, compassion, and cherished memories. She touched the lives of many as a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.
Mary shared a special bond with her surviving brothers and sisters: Kiyoshi (Nancy), Victor (Terry), Mitshu (Keiko), Hiroshi (Betty), Tomoko (Shigeo), Keiko (Kiyoshi), and Reiko (Fred). Her love and connection with her siblings formed an unbreakable bond that lasted a lifetime.
In the journey of love, Mary found her soulmate, Derek, who became her cherished partner. Their bond was a source of strength, love, and companionship, enriching both of their lives. They created countless memories together, sharing laughter, adventures, and unwavering support.
Mary's greatest joy and accomplishment was her role as a devoted mother to her son, Raymond (Anna). She poured her love, wisdom, and guidance into nurturing Raymond, helping shape him into the remarkable person he is today. Her love for Raymond knew no bounds, and she treasured every moment spent with him.
Mary's love for music, particularly Elvis Presley, was a reflection of her vibrant spirit. She found joy and solace in the timeless melodies of Elvis's music, and his songs held a special place in her heart. One song that resonated deeply with Mary was "My Way." Its lyrics and message of living life on one's own terms perfectly encapsulated her indomitable spirit and determination.
Mary's love extended to her cherished grandsons: Mathew, Mitchell, and Grayson. She took great delight in witnessing them grow, offering her unconditional love, and support. Mary's presence in their lives will forever be etched in their hearts.
During her illness, Mary was blessed to have the support and care of her family and her extended family Jennifer, Darren, Susan, Rona, Nora, Audrey and Brenda. Their unwavering friendship, compassion, and assistance provided immeasurable comfort and strength during difficult times. Their selfless acts of kindness were a source of light in Mary's life, and she deeply appreciated their presence and support.
Thank you to the amazing doctors and nurses at Burnaby General Oncology. Dr. Simon Yu, Easter, Jamie and Michelle all made her process bearable.
Thank you to the amazing nurses and doctors at Surrey Memorial Palliative Care Unit. They showed her compassion, made her comfortable and peaceful with exceptional respect.
A private service will be held on July 12, 2023. In honor of Mary, the family kindly requests that any donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory.
