Ngan Yau Chow was born in August 8, 1937 in the village of Nam Chun on the outskirts of Guangzhou, in the province of Guangdong, China. She was the eldest of nine children. Ngan leaves behind: husband, John; children, Victor (Martha), Linda, Allan (Kim), Robert; grandchildren, Tia, Ian, Brandon, Matthew and Kevin; mother, Foo Sum Chow; brothers, Bill (Lisa), Gary (Yu Huan), Gordon (Sandy); sisters, predeceased Betty (Tommy); Son (Miguel), Maria Rosa (Antonio), Ngan Fwan (Wayne), Fay (Charles).
Ngan married John Kwai Low in 1958 and immigrated to Vancouver where, together, they ran New World Confectionery for 55 years. In the early years, they worked 12 – 14 hour days, seven days a week and rarely took holidays. Ngan and John instilled strong work ethics in their children as each child grew up helping out at the store. There they learned the value of hard work, the importance of family and giving back.
Over the years, Ngan helped to sponsor her siblings and parents to Canada. She loved coupon shopping and finding deals for the store. In her later years, she was able to travel extensively with family and friends. In 2006, she travelled with 24 family members (Low side) to China and visit the family village. It was a special trip filled with many happy memories. More recently, she went with her siblings on a cruise to Alaska which she thoroughly enjoyed.
She love her grandchildren dearly and was always giving the older ones Starbucks and Tim Horton cards. When the younger one returned home to visit, there were always shopping trips with a cart full of toys and clothes.
She was a strong, kind and caring soul who was very generous to family and friends. When the store closed in 2014, many of the regular customers came in with cards and hugs for her kind service over the years. She worked right up until her cancer diagnosis in June 2014 and fought the cancer hard and so bravely till the very end.
Ngan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend who will be sorely missed. She was a beautiful soul inside and out.
May she rest in peace.
