We are deeply saddened to announce that after suffering for a few years with PSP (Progressive supranuclear palsy), Rick left our world on March 1st, 2022 with his wife of 53 years, Carol, by his side. He left wonderful memories with his two daughters, Michelle (Shawn) and Crista (Darren) and two much loved grandchildren, Julia (Luke) and Cason. He also leaves his sister Sharon (Rick), cousins, friends and colleagues.
Rick was born in Vancouver to Wilbur and Frieda Townsend. He graduated from John Oliver in 1964 and enjoyed playing baseball, football and basketball. He went onto UBC where he met Carol and graduated with a BA and a B.Ed, later returning for his Masters. Rick and Carol married at Ebenezer Baptist June 28, 1969.
Rick lived a full life as an educator. He taught English at Templeton, was a counsellor at Churchill, and then vice-principal at Churchill, Tupper and Point Grey. During that time he made many friends and touched the lives of hundreds of students.
Rick’s greatest love was spending time with his family. He always made a special point of ‘Papa days’ with Julia and Cason and loved travelling with the family, especially their summer trips to Otter lake. Rick and Carol retired early and enjoyed annual trips to Maui, as well as travel to Europe, Central America and many cruises including a special Danube river cruise.
Rick loved photography, and was rarely seen without his camera. He enjoyed reading, golfing, creating special holiday and family DVDs on his computer, and motorcycling. Rick went on many bike trips with his best friend Bob, even as far as the Grand Canyon.
Although he left too soon he will forever have a special place in the hearts of his family and those who loved him. We are comforted knowing he is forever with his Lord, and still, he will be missed terribly but remembered with great love.
Special thanks to Pastor George and Judy for their visits and to his dear friend Dave for his weekly visits.
Celebration of life to be held on Saturday, March 19th, 2022 1:30pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church - 6858 Fraser Street, Vancouver. Masks and proof of vaccination will be required.
