He was born on the 19th of June, 1920 in Sun Wui, China. While living in Hong Kong he met and married our mother Lai Yung Leung. When the Japanese invaded Hong Kong during WWII, they lost their home and their livelihood and were forced to flee Hong Kong to live with his parents and siblings in mainland China. Father became the primary provider for his parents and siblings, as well as his own young family. He and mother endured hardships and war, but managed to persevere. After the war they returned to Hong Kong to re-build their lives.
Father was an entrepreneur at heart. He owned and ran several successful businesses in Hong Kong: a private elementary school, a butcher shop, as well as a wig manufacturing company.
In 1971, in search of better opportunities for his family, he made the decision to move his family once again, this time to Vancouver, Canada. There, Ben Wong, a very close family friend, gave him a job despite his limited English. He has always been thankful for this. Life was definitely not easy, but with the help of his family and sound real estate investments he was able to save enough money to purchase a grocery store. Father and Mother ran the grocery store for a few years until their retirement in the early 80’s.
His legacy lives on in his nine children and their spouses: Amy (Horne), Charles (Shirley), Selina (Jim), Winnie (Wei), Anna (Gok), Connie (David), Michael (Millie), Yulanda (Bill), Jimmy (Ling Ling); eighteen grandchildren; and sixteen great- grandchildren.
