Shirley "Sue" Smith was born and raised in Vancouver, growing up in a family of five children, which included two older brothers (Jack and Allen) and two younger brothers (Stan - aka Bud - and Robbie). From an early age, Shirley cherished her beloved doll named Sue, which inspired her to adopt the name, however only close friends were allowed to call her Sue.
She completed her education at John Oliver High School, where she developed her passion for sewing. Initially working for Singer Sewing Machines in Vancouver and Nanaimo, Shirley established herself in the Kerrisdale area as an independent dressmaker. She worked hard and created countless dresses and bridal party gowns. She genuinely appreciated her clients and developed long lasting relationships with some. Shirley loved living on the Kerrisdale "drive" and was a well-known patron to everyone there.
Although she never married, she truly embraced being a "grandmother" to Jazmine Lew and being a part of the Lew family. Sue cherished her nephew Tim, who always took time to make sure she had everything she needed, and his wife Julie, their son Brendan and daughter Leah. After moving to Brock Fahrni Long Term Care in 2018, Shirley loved to have Tim drive her around Kerrisdale and point out all the places she used to frequent. Her memory and wit were sharp as ever.
Tim Smith and family would like to thank all the staff and carers from Brock Fahrni Pavillion who truly made Shirley feel safe and loved. She came to view it as her home. Thank-you for being there for Shirley. You are all amazing.
Sue’s vibrant personality and creative spirit left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A small memorial will be held on January 28, 2025 at VanDusen Botanical Garden, 5251 Oak Street, Vancouver, BC.
