It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Tim McLaughlin on November 1st, 2023, at the age of 58. He is survived by his daughter Esmé, wife Charllotte, step children Alex and Sophena, grandchildren Boden, Calico and Millie and brother Mark.
Born on October 12th, 1965, in London, Ontario, Tim spent his youth on the East Coast. His early interests were stamp collecting, radio, music, photography, writing and second hand bookstores. He held a Masters Degree in Philosophy of Science from the University of Western Ontario. For over 25 years he was active in experimental radio and hypertext fiction - for which he is included in the Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada.
Tim came out west in the early 90’s and planted roots on the Sunshine Coast and in Vancouver. He joined the company Maiwa in 2002 and inspired the world of craft, textiles, and natural dyes ever since. With Charllotte, Tim travelled extensively to research and document natural dyes and craft traditions. The strength in the formidable partnership between Tim and Charllotte resonated throughout the world of textiles and natural dyes. Tim was an artist, a writer, a chemist, an ink maker, a photographer, a film maker. He had the unique ability to blend a life of curiosity with a life of art and at the same time mentor and inspire all those around him.
On November 1st Tim suffered a sudden cardiac arrest caused by an aortic aneurysm. We lost a gentle giant of a man. His wit and play on words was exceptional. His quiet intellect was an inspiration. Tim left behind a lifetime of memories for us to discover and that we can celebrate.
